Cleo takes her two young kits, Hunter and Scout, to find shelter in the forest since she believes her Twolegs were going to give her kits away. She tried to settle in the forest, but Clear Sky drove the queen and her kits away. River Ripple finds Cleo nursing her kits near the river and invites them to join his clearing with the others. Woodlouse, Sage, Silver, and Hollow greet the newcomers, though Night questions how a kittypet can contribute to their group. Cleo soon learns how to hunt in the next few days.

While Night teaches her how to fish, Cleo's mate, Casper, abruptly attacks the black-and-white she-cat, and Cleo pulls him away. Casper soon realizes his mistake, and Cleo apologies for his rash actions. Casper explains how he has been searching for Cleo and their kits since their new Twolegs are much kinder and might accept their kits. Cleo hopes her mate will stay with them, but Casper convinces her that they should return to being kittypets since their kits will be safer. Seasons later, Cleo tells Night, Riverstar, and Drizzle about three new cats who arrived near the Carrionplace, having been reunited with Night when she was searching for Riverstar a half-moon earlier.
