"[...] We're free! We're living the dream!"
— Beach about his and Slate's freedom in Ivypool's Heart, page 86

Beach is a wiry dark tabby tom.[2]

Ivypool's Heart[]

Beach: "Welcome! This is our camp. Isn't it great?"
Dovewing: "Very impressive."
Beach: "Make yourselves at home. We'll go and catch some prey for you."
—Beach welcoming the Clan cats Ivypool's Heart, page 78
While the Clan cats chase a rabbit, two unknown cats appear over a hill, also pursuing the rabbit, and the two groups collide and the rabbit escapes. The two very young toms are apologetic but welcoming, with Beach noting that the Clan cats are unfamiliar. Slate introduces himself and his brother. Dovewing, suspicious, asks if they are with the kittypets from the barn, and Slate reassures her that they live alone together. Admiring Dovewing, Beach adds that they talk to she-cats. Dovewing remarks that she is too old for him and has a family of her own. Ivypool questions whether they are old enough to be surviving alone, to which Beach replies that their mother had decided that it was time for them to leave.
Rootspring recognizes the Sisters when Slate describes their group, and Beach is surprised but pleased that he is their kin. As the three toms talk, Ivypool notices an infected cut on Beach's flank, feeling agitated with the Sisters for sending the young cats away. After Dovewing explains that the Clan cats are lost, Beach and Slate offer to shelter them and help them to connect with the earth to find out where they should go. Despite their doubts, the Clan cats agree, and the brothers excitedly take them to their camp in a rocky hollow. The Clan cats are shocked at how unkempt the camp is as Beach happily welcomes them, and he and Slate hurry off to fetch prey. Ivypool and Dovewing decide to teach them to keep their living space clean, and Whistlepaw heads out to search for herbs to treat Beach's injury. As they wait, the group discusses the two young toms, doubting their ability to connect to the earth.
The brothers soon return with a rabbit, which the cats proceed to eat. When they finish, Beach pushes the leftovers aside and drinks from the pool, prompting Dovewing to tell them to discard leftover prey outside so that scavengers are not attracted to the camp. Slate remarks that they had seen a rat, with Beach adding that they ate it and that it was not tasty. Ivypool lectures them on getting rid of leftovers before asking when they last cleaned their bedding, to which Beach replies with uncertainty. Ivypool and Dovewing explain to the two brothers how to clean their camp, and Dovewing mentions that she-cats are attracted to toms who can maintain a clean space. Beach eagerly leaps into action, dividing the camp between himself and Slate.
Once he and Slate clear away the crow-food, Whistlepaw asks Beach about his wound, and he says that he and Slate fought a dog. He claims that the wound is fine, but Whistlepaw insists on treating it, to which Beach agrees once Dovewing explains the purpose of a medicine cat. He licks the wound clean and Whistlepaw treats it with a horsetail poultice. Beach compliments her fur and Slate admires her tail, and Whistlepaw explains that medicine cats cannot take mates, to Beach's disappointment. The Clan cats tell the brothers how to treat potential mates, before offering for them to return home with them, but Slate and Beach prefer their freedom. Icewing reminds them of their promise to connect to the earth and find out where the patrol should go, and Beach eagerly agrees. Whistlepaw, however, tells him to rest his injury, and he tries to connect to the earth from where he is, but is unable to.
After Slate fails to connect to the earth, Whistlepaw teaches him how to apply the horsetail to Beach's wound. Beach attempts to use the Sisters' method of contacting spirits, but after some time, Rootspring stops him gently and asks if someone else can help. Slate suggests going to the Sisters, to Rootspring's surprise, and Beach explains to him that the toms are allowed to visit the Sisters. He is enthusiastic when Ivypool mentions that the Clan cats know the Sisters well. The following day, Whistlepaw tends to Beach's dressing and, instead of replacing the poultice, she soaks the wound with horsetail juice, and Beach thanks her. The cats soon set out, with the brothers carrying mice for the Sisters.
As they pass the barn, Ivypool asks Beach if he and his brother have encountered the aggressive kittypets, and he tells her that one of them had caused his injury. Just as Dovewing suggests they hurry up, the dogs from the barn rush toward the cats and they end up in a fight. Whistlepaw prevents Beach from joining in to help Slate when he is caught by one of the dogs, and once the dogs flee, he crouches beside Slate while Whistlepaw tends to him. Once they are ready to continue their journey, Beach grabs the mice and they set off with him in the lead. They follow a stream to the Sisters, and Beach calls out to them.
Snow thanks the brothers for the mice and tells them to take the prey to Flurry in the nursery. Beach is startled by this, and she explains that their mother has had three kits. The two dash off to visit their mother, and Ivypool later sees them spending time with her outside the nursery. When the Sisters prepare to perform a ceremony for Bristlefrost and Graystripe, Beach and Slate position themselves outside the circle. The Sisters wail for the spirits, and Ivypool realizes that it is the ritual that Beach had been attempting before. Following the Sisters' failure to contact Bristlefrost, Ivypool declares that she is leaving to her nest, and Beach asks her to stay. She refuses and leaves, wondering if she had been using Beach and Slate to relieve her own grief. When Ivypool hears Rootspring arguing with Snow about kin, he tells Snow that Beach could have died from his injury if not for Whistlepaw.

Quotes[]

"Okay. Let's do it. Slate, you start over on that side, and I'll start here."
―Beach's eagerness to clean Ivypool's Heart, page 82

Beach: "Thank you. You know, Whistlepaw, you have beautiful fur. It's very...tabby."
Slate: "Great tail, too."
Whistlepaw: "I'm sorry. But like I told you, I'm a medicine cat. That means I can't take a mate. I have to be ready to care for all my Clanmates, and I can't do that and raise kits."
Beach: "Oh, mouse dung... I mean, of course... I understand."
—Beach and Slate complimenting Whistlepaw Ivypool's Heart, page 84

"Stay a bit longer. It's great having you here."
―Beach to Ivypool Ivypool's Heart, page 107

Notes[]

  1. Beach and Slate are both stated to be around the age of Clan apprentices when they first appear.[2] This would make them at least six moons old. However, they cannot be over six moons old, as six moons prior to Ivypool's Heart are the final books of The Broken Code. They do not appear in any of the three books that all feature the Sisters, including their mother, Flurry. This means they would then have to have been born very shortly after, placing their births in greenleaf.
