Nyarlathotep is the main antagonist of The Owl House and Cthulhu Mythos crossover fanfic The Gods Awaken. He was the original ruler of the Boiling Isles deeply ingrained with the inner workings before being locked away for thousands of years.
Personality[]
The main gist behind the Crawling Chaos is that he is a constant schemer who wears a mask of sophistication and gentlemanly manners but is actually a psychopathic eldritch god who has a huge ego. Part of the reason as to why he wants to destroy the Boiling Isles is because he believed that the inhabitants of the Isles were ungrateful to him even though he would be the one to raze their villages if they did not offer tribute to him.
As a manipulator, Nyarlathotep often preys on the insecurities or hidden desires of his intended targets such as when he sensed that Boscha would want revenge on Willow or taking advantage of Odalia Blight's obsession with being the most powerful witch of the Isles. Despite this, Nyarlathotep seemingly takes Boscha under his wing to the point where he even grants her a small portion of his power and advertises her as his prized apprentice. He even keeps his end of the deal to arrange for a witch duel between Boscha and Willow even though that would stave off his end goal of destroying the Isles. He even offers her to become his acolyte in the new world he would create.
Biography[]
Prehistory[]
Eons ago, Nyarlathotep led the eldritch gods on assaults on different universes which led to the Outer Gods feeding on many worlds. One day, Nyarlathotep was engaged in a battle against the Elder Gods led by Nodens. Becoming weakened due to the attack, Nyarlathotep ripped his way into the demon realm and established his base there. Coming upon the rotting body of the Titan, Nyarlathotep enchanted it with his dark magic. It was because of Nyarlathotep that the early witches of the Boiling Isles acquired magic in return for their servitude. However, they also were made to sacrifice their children in rituals to the dark god.
Anytime dissenters would oppose Nyarlathotep, he would destroy their villages until his blood lust was subsided. During one of his attacks, he personally murdered the mother of King in his Haunter of the Dark form and cursing him when he was a child after which he stole his horn and kept it as part of his macabre collection of souvenirs.
It would continue like this until some hooded figure, the ancestor of Luz Noceda, faced him in a battle. After using the Crawling Chaos' powers against him, the hooded figure traps Nyarlathotep in a glass prison. Before being sealed away for thousands of years, Nyarlathotep divided his soul and stated that within fifty years, there would be a ruler set in place to pave the way for his return. It was also heavily implied that the Savage Ages where witches performed wild magic freely was in part due to Nyarlathotep's corrupting force. His soul would eventually form into Emperor Belos who enforced the coven system. However, he also developed his own agency due to him being away from Nyarlathotep for thousands of years.
Modern day[]
After an exhibit of the history of the Isles, Nyarlathotep's prison gradually broke away until he could escape. Sometime after becoming adjusted with how the Boiling Isles changed during his absence, Nyarlathotep meets Boscha and decides to strike a deal with her noting that she was wanting revenge on Willow for humiliating her during their Grudgby match. Nyarlathotep finalizes the deal by having her sign her name in the Book of Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God.
Nyarlathotep's main initiative was retrieving the lost power that was stripped away from him and hidden away in the Necronomicon. In the mean time, Nyarlathotep replenished his strength by feeding on several abandoned palismen after murdering the Bat Queen and killing the source behind their creation. He meets Luz, Eda, and King when they discovered one of the Bat Queen's offspring, but King became traumatized due to seeing the Crawling Chaos in his bat-like form. Boscha engages in a fight with Luz, but Nyarlathotep stops Boscha because of her broken leg. Unbeknownst to Luz, she unwittingly removed one of the seals keeping Nyarlathotep's powers locked away by using her ice glyph.
Nyarlathotep next tempts Odalia Blight into helping his cause by promising her that her family name would be immortalized in his new world. He then grants her a magic staff (comprised of a jewel containing the power of the Outer Gods) so she could lead a sapient armor horde on the Earth. As Nikola Tesla, Nyarlathotep infiltrates Hexside with Boscha having known Principal Bump thousands of years ago. He threatens the lives of the staff and his students if he did not give him the location of the Necronomicon on Earth by releasing Grometheus to run amuck on the Boiling Isles. After getting what he asked for, he traps the entire faculty and students inside stating that only an Elder God could hope to dismember it.
Luz and Amity are taken back to the demon realm when they retrieve the Necronomicon from Hypnos. The Crawling Chaos kidnaps Eda, King, and Lilith and imprisons them in an impenetrable cage that he fills with water. Nyarlathotep tempts Luz with the offer of ruling the Boiling Isles by his side if she gave him the Necronomicon. However, she instead destroys it in blind hope that it would defeat Nyarlathotep. Unfortunately for her, Nyarlathotep anticipated it knowing that regardless of her choice, he would get his power back. Thus, the Crawling Chaos regained his power and sends eldritch beings to mass abduct civilians so they could watch Boscha's battle with Willow.
Using his power as a demonstration, Nyarlathotep completely destroys the arctic region of the Boiling Isles situated at the knee by resurrecting that body part. He then decides to revive the Right Arm of the Titan to crush Bonesborough if Willow refused to comply.
Abilities[]
Prior to being banished for thousands of years, Nyarlathotep was a nigh-omnipotent force to be reckoned with. He displays the ability to warp reality and rip holes into space-time to escape to other dimensions if need be. He embedded the Titan making the Boiling Isles with his dark magic and can resurrect the Titan itself if he felt the need likely meaning he has some form of necromancy. He can also summon other Outer Gods and Outer Gods into worlds as well as evidenced by him destroying scores of multiverses alongside his wicked kin.
But by far his most prominent ability is to shapeshift. Throughout the course of the story, Nyarlathotep takes on several forms up to and including: the Black Man; the Haunter in the Dark; Nikola Tesla, among others. In fact, these are merely just a small portion of his different disguises: he has over a thousand different forms more terrifying and monstrous that could drive anyone to madness just by a mere glimpse.
