Clover is the main protagonist of the UNDERTALE fan-made prequel Undertale Yellow.
They are the sixth human to fall into the Underground to find out what happened to the other children who disappeared and bring justice to whoever hurt them.
Despite normally being a heroic character, the player's actions can turn them into the villainous protagonist of the Genocide Route (Also known as the Vengence Route).
Biography[]
Background[]
Clover's past is shrouded with mystery, however, a few hints throughout the game heavily imply that they come from a large, poor and possibly abusive household, where they were the one in charge of cooking dinner, had nothing to watch on TV other than static, had to sleep in cramped places and overall lived in bad conditions.
At some point, Clover obtained a poster about the missing children and, filled with a sense of justice (and possibly escapism), they decided to make it their mission to find these missing people and bring them justice. Entering the Underground, they would meet the Boss Monster Toriel and live with her in the Ruins, infuriating Flowey as he planned to use them for his purposes. As such, after hundreds of unsuccessful resets, Flowey would rig a puzzle in the Ruins to change their course, leading to the events of the game.
Genocide Route[]
After entering the Ruins, Clover would unknowingly activate a rigged switch, collapsing the floor and causing them to fall into the Dark Ruins. From there, they would meet Flowey and, accepting his deal to get to Asgore, would begin their quest, massacring the monsters living there.
Much like in the Genocide Route in the original UNDERTALE, Clover starts killing every monster they find until every room is exhausted of encounters and nobody else appears, Flowey will note how dusty everything is getting and concludes that mercy "isn't Clover's thing", but he will support his friend either way.
Dalv will also note how empty everything is now, knowing that it was Clover who made everyone disappear, which severely hurts him since he starts to believe the human only started killing everyone because of his wish to be left alone. Dalv fights Clover but is defeated, dying feeling guilty for the deaths of everyone in the ruins.
After leaving the Ruins and arriving in Snowdin, Clover continues their rampage, word gets around and the place gets completely evacuated, they still meet with the band and Mo, but since they aren't enemies, Clover leaves them alone.
They eventually run into Martlet, who confuses them with a monster and tries to help them, Clover refuses and attacks her, which leads to a battle where Martlet goes all out, but is still ultimately defeated by Clover and forced to retreat.
Clover continues their way through the Dunes and the Mines, both also completely abandoned, by this point they begin to feel more detached from their surroundings and especially from Flowey, who starts to notice that Clover is getting increasingly less cooperative.
Clover eventually runs into Martlet again, who confronts them about their twisted sense of justice and talks about the many people they are hurting and killing. Their conversation is cut short by Clover, who tries to shoot at her right there on the spot, but she manages to escape just in time.
Arriving at the Wild East, they meet Starlo, who confesses that he couldn't run away and challenges Clover to a duel, which they seemingly accept.
While it's possible to cheat and shoot Starlo early or let him win, the result doesn't matter, as Starlo can't bring himself to kill them, a problem that Clover doesn't have, which results in them swiftly gunning down Starlo.
Ceroba arrives and talks to Starlo one last time, after he dies she runs straight to Clover to fight them. However, after many failed attempts and resets from Flowey, they manage to kill Ceroba, who dies condemning Clover for their actions.
Getting to the Steamworks is where Clover and Flowey's relationship really starts worsening, Flowey grows increasingly annoyed at Clover's recklessness, questioning if they even think before shooting, he also gets mad that every time they can't solve a puzzle, they demand that he solves for them.
Once Clover finds out that there are robots in the Steamworks, they go out of their way to exterminate all of them, even though Flowey keeps insisting that this is useless, they just ignore him.
Clover runs into Mo for the third time, he has still been selling stuff for them even though he knows of their bad deeds, excusing it all as "little sins", however, this time Clover has had enough of him and points their gun at him, even having the option to rob him of all his money, leaving Mo completely hopeless.
Throughout the entire Steamworks, Clover has been chasing a robot named Axis, who, after being shot down by Clover, starts to remember something about a human he met in the past, but for now is more focused on escaping and evacuating as many robots as he can, the two eventually fight, where Axis uses a trash can lid to defend himself against Clover's bullets.
During the battle, Axis talks about the human and how, due to his programming, he was forced to kill them, this infuriates Clover so much that their LOVE starts rising multiple times without even needing EXP, and they grow so powerful that their SOUL blasts away Axis's shield.
The robot pleads, trying to say that it wasn't his fault, but Clover doesn't care and completely obliterates Axis, leaving Flowey speechless.
By this point, Clover is completely detached from true justice, now they just act in bloodthirsty vengeance and rage, truly believing every single monster on the Underground deserves to be killed in the name of justice.
They eventually have their final confrontation with Martlet, who injects herself with Determination in hopes of stopping Clovr once and for all, however, even this power isn't enough to stop them, and Martlet's body can't support the Determination for too much time, she too falls.
Flowey appears right after, enraged at Clover now that their reckless actions have caused the entire Underground to be on lockdown, and reaching Asgore is almost impossible now, Flowey gets so mad that he accidentally reveals his true plan to get the human SOULs, he quickly tries to Reset, but can't as now Clover's Determination is far greater than his and they now have complete control over the timeline, Flowey tries to fight and run, but he can't escape, he finally breaks down, revealing his true colors and expressing his hatred for Clover, who quickly shuts him up by shooting him to death.
Now more powerful than ever, Clover swiftly arrives at the castle with vengeance on their mind, they meet Asgore, the one who had hurt all those missing humans, the king tries to fight, but Clover effortlessly destroys his trident and kills him, absorbing his SOUL and leaving the Underground with the human SOULs.
Appearance[]
Clover is a human child of indeterminable gender with fair skin and brown hair cut into a bun, typically seen with an expression of neutrality on their face. They wear a yellow bandana with blue polka-dots, a brown leather jacket, blue pants held up by a belt, and their signature cowboy hat.
When on the Genocide Route, Clover's eyes become obscured by a thick shadow covering the upper part of their face.
Personality[]
Due to their nature as a silent protagonist, Clover does not make their personality very obvious, however, it's possible to determine that they are a strong-willed and determined kid with a great sense of justice.
In the Neutral and Pacifist Routes, Clover is shown to be very kind, compassionate, forgiving and altruistic, if a bit cheeky at times. All these traits, however, are completely lost in the Genocide Route.
What once starts as a need to bring justice soon becomes an obsessive need to impose their twisted view of justice onto monsterkind. For Clover, it doesn't matter the nature of the monster, if they are an enemy, they deserve to be killed.
Clover's personality in this route is cold, distant, reckless, ruthlessly violent, cruel and obsessive. By the end of the game, they are completely detached from their humanity and any other positive quality they once had, acting completely on instinct and laser-focused on their mission. While they initially start out with noble intentions, it's soon shown that Clover is completely delusional in their killing of monsters, slaughtering even the most innocent.
However, a positive trait that Clover maintains regardless of the route is their relationship with Martlet. On a Neutral Route, and even on a Aborted Genocide Route, Martlet is the sole monster that Clover cannot bring themselves to kill, likely in part of how kind she is and how she's the only monster to actively want to help them, even during their worst moments. When Flowey kills her on a Neutral Route, their immediate reaction her is trying to kill him in retaliation. Even when they clash as enemies on the Genocide Route, she's the only monster that Clover goes out of their way to try and find a justifiable reason to kill.
Trivia[]
- Clover and Axis's roles are inverted during the Genocide Route, whereas before the robot was constantly chasing Clover, now they are chasing him around.
- There are a lot of unique scenarios and interactions if Clover aborts the Genocide Route. For instance, if Clover aborts the route in the Steamworks right before fighting Axis, Flowey will mock Clover for their weakness and attempting to redeem themselves when he kills Martlet.
