The Lies Will Catch Up To You[2] is the thirteenth episode of the eighth season of The Vampire Diaries and the one hundred and sixty-eighth episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
EVIL IN THE PAST – Damon and Alaric come face to face with an old enemy after they obtain a weapon that may be able to destroy Cade. Stefan is held captive by a surprising acquaintance and is forced to confront a dark secret from his past. Meanwhile, Caroline and Matt try to keep Stefan's violent history from destroying him. Cade focuses his attention on Bonnie and digs deep into her mind.
Plot[]
Kai reveals that three days ago, when Matt rang the bell 11 times, Kai was also able to cross from Hell into the real world. He appeared in Mystic Grill and ordered food, but soon realized that he can't feel the taste. He realizes that he's not fully back.
Back in the present, Matt reveals to Caroline that the people had started filing reports about Stefan meaning that his compulsion started to wear off when he became human. Elsewhere, Stefan's kidnaper Dorian drives him to the woods. He says that he remembered that Stefan killed his father and sister in 2010, which was the time he was working for Klaus. Dorian came home and saw Stefan who compelled him to forget about him. Stefan set the house on fire and Dorian believed that they died in the fire. Dorian gives him a shovel to dig himself a grave.
Meanwhile, Damon calls Bonnie and asks her to help Kai get fully back into the world of living. In return, Kai would unlink her and Elena's lives, but Bonnie refuses to help him. Alaric realizes that Kai is back because he's tweeted again after for years. Later Kai realizes that he's dying and says to Damon to hurry up because they need each other's help.
Elsewhere, Bonnie visits Cade and asks him how to get Enzo out of Hell. He helps her contact him and They see each other and embrace, but he warns her not to trust Cade. Cade soon realized that when Enzo died, she'd created a new dimension just like he did thousands of years ago. He confronts her and learns that Kai is also back.
Meanwhile, Matt and Caroline interview the newly uncompelled people, listen to their stories, compel them to forget about them and plan on bribing them by sending money via mail. Meanwhile, Dorian has Stefan on gunpoint and accidentally shot him. He takes him to the hospital, but Stefan loses consciousness on the way. Carolines arrives but is unable to heal him. Stefan sees the scene from out of his body. Cade tells him that he's dying and that he should move on and leave Caroline now instead of in 50 years. He eventually wakes up in the hospital and decides to break up with Caroline because he wants a new start outside of Mystic Falls. Matt gives Dorian Stefan's police records and tells him to do what he wants with it.
Bonnie realizes how to access the dimension she'd created and finally is able to talk with Enzo. Meanwhile, Alaric brings the twins to Caroline and they soon realize that their powers are getting stronger and out of control. Elsewhere, Damon convinces Kai that he needs to redeem himself if he doesn't want to return to Hell. Kai agrees to bring Elena back and they go to the crypt. Kai stabs Damon and escapes with Elena's coffin saying that he doesn't believe in redemption.

- It has been 3 days since Matt rung the Maxwell Bell 11 times. That 2 days have past since Enzo was killed by Stefan and Bonnie injecting him the Cure.
- Anyone that was ever compelled by a vampire who is cured, the compulsion begins to wear off of them. Meaning anyone compelled by Katherine (i.e. the entire town of Willoughby, PA), Elena and Stefan would've remembered everything they were compelled to forget or do.
- Kai tells Damon and Alaric if they help get completely out of Hell that he'll help them kill Arcadius. To keep Alaric from killing him and sending back to Hell, Kai says he'll wake up Elena for him.
- Arcadius reveals to Bonnie that her scream full of anguish and rage for Enzo's death created a psychic dimension like his own and that Enzo's soul is there.
- Damon takes Kai to the Salvatore crypt where Elena's casket has been moved back to from upstate New York so that he can wake up Elena. Instead Kai betrays Damon by siphoning the magic of his vampirism, taking both Elena's casket and the weapon that can kill Cade.
