Hower is a lower mid-tier student of Wellston High and one of it's many, many bullies. He follows a group of mid-tiers who discriminate weaker students.
Appearance[]
Hower is a teenager with chartreuse coloured hair and blue eyes and is usually seen wearing a Wellston school uniform. Evie has also noted that Hower "looks angry all the time." His appearance (and general countenance) is similar to that of Arlo, according to Elaine.
Like Arlo, his eyes glow a bright sky blue when using his ability. His speech bubbles are chartreuse.
Personality[]
According to Evie, Hower is the type of person to "kiss up" to Wellston's stronger mid-tiers. Though he is not particularly powerful, Hower is equally as unpleasant when compared to the likes of Gavin and Tanner, and is often seen bullying weaker students. Thanks to his associations with the school's strong mid-tiers, Hower acts with authority and forces other students to do his bidding.
History[]
Project Partners[]
On John's first day of school, Hower was assigned a literary analysis project with Mardin.[1]
Plot[]
Suspension[]
During lunch one day, Hower was about to attack John with his Heat Palm, but only succeeded in getting a bloody nose from John elbowing him in the face. As John warned him not to mess with him that day, Hower could only look on in bewilderment.[2]
Capture[]
Hower was given an assignment, but he forced Evie to do it for him. Her efforts amounted to a measly D+ for him. Furious with the results, Hower began to assert his authority over Evie by burning her arm with his Heat Palm. However, once Seraphina appeared to stop the bullying, Hower took this as the opportunity to take out the school's former Ace in hopes to make a name for himself. Despite being crippled, Seraphina used the self-defense techniques she learned from John and easily knocked Hower to the ground with one punch.[3]
Hower then attempted to attack Seraphina again and managed to grab her arm, but got kneed in the stomach and smacked in the face. Humiliated, Hower ran off and vowed to make Seraphina pay. This would not be the last Seraphina would see of Hower as the bully called Illena, Wenqi, and numerous other bullies to capture Seraphina. He and Krolik were seen by another student, dragging Seraphina away[4] as they took her to an abandoned building.[5]
Hower stood next to Illena as the latter taunted Seraphina.[6] He was then commanded to untie Seraphina, allowing the former Ace to battle Illena. After Seraphina lost to Illena and Misa, Hower got on his knees and spitefully warned her that she "Better watch your step from now on!" before tying her back up.[7]
The next day, several of the kidnappers skipped school to torment Seraphina some more. Since he had to make up for his falling grades, Hower was unable to join them. He was pretty bitter about it, putting the blame on Evie for robbing him of the chance for more fun. As he stormed down the hallway, someone called out to him by name. He turned to see it was Arlo addressing him. Behind the King was Elaine and Evie. [8] Hower snapped at the latter for what he saw as an attempt to get him into trouble. Evie was intimidated, but Arlo took charge of the encounter and shoved him into the wall. Hower found himself grilled over Seraphina's disappearance. When his feeble attempt to justify himself failed miserably, he spilled the beans on the whole plot. Arlo's furious reaction prompted Hower to attempt shifting blame in order to downplay his involvement. This didn't work either, and Arlo promised him that he would not escape punishment.[9]
Joker[]
As with everybody who was found out to have tormented Seraphina, Hower was suspended for two weeks. Considering what happened to those who went back for seconds, he got off lightly.[10] Upon returning to school, the gang decided to lay low.[11]
Powers & Abilities[]
Heat Palm: Hower's ability is Heat Palm, which allows him to heat up his palms in order to burn things.[2] Hower's Heat Palm is strong enough to painfully burn human flesh. In addition to its burning properties, Hower appears to be resistant to his ability, as shown when he touched his face while his ability was still active.[5]
Relationships[]
- John: Like all other students at Wellston, Hower sees John as an easy target to bully.
- Mardin: Hower and Mardin were once partnered up do present a literary analysis project, they seemed happy with the parings, presumably because they are friends, though it was never clarified.[1]
- Seraphina: After her ability loss, Hower sees Seraphina as an easy target. However, after getting beaten by her he quickly cowers away and forms her kidnapping with Illena. After getting beaten down and tortured he says she's not so tough now. It is unknown what is his relationship with Seraphina after she gained back her ability.
- Evie: As a mid-tier, Hower forced the less powerful Evie to write his essay, but would later regret the decision when the paper she wrote came back with a D+. He blamed Evie for saving her own paper over his.
Quotes[]
- (To John) "Hey loser! Ready to lose your lunch?!"[2]
- (To Seraphina) "Not so tough anymore, are you? Better watch your step from now on!"[7]
Notes & Trivia[]
- As a testament to his utter ineptitude as a fighter, John, Seraphina, and Arlo have all been able to humble Hower without the use of abilities.[2][3][9]
- Hower's failed essay is about two best friends, a unicorn and a normal horse. The essay also gives out a reason why unicorns are better than horses.
- The essay was the result of Hower forcing Evie to write it.
