Stray Servant (はぐれサーヴァント, Hagure Sāvanto?, localized as "Rogue Servant") is a term for Servants active during a Holy Grail War without a connection to a Master.
Characteristics[]
The process of incarnation, usually by process of interacting with the Greater Holy Grail of Fuyuki or its Grail Mud, can allow a Servant to exist independently from a Master in exchange for losing certain Servant qualities; for example, Amakusa Shirou Tokisada gains a flesh and blood body able to exist without Master support, but he is reduced to the physical abilities of a human without Magical Energy support.
Fuyuki Holy Grail War systems[]
Within the Fuyuki Holy Grail War and similar systems, Stray Servants are typically those who have lost their Master in battle or through other means. They can last between several hours and several days depending on their abilities; they can supplement themselves via mana transfer, but require an anchor to exist for longer than that. Servants that possess the Independent Action Skill, usually found on the Archer class, typically last the longest.
Grand Order[]
Within the Grand Orders, Stray Servants are typically those summoned by the land through the Counter Force or local Holy Grail and are able to exist without a Master due to the unusual conditions inherent in Singularities and Lostbelts.
Waxing Moon Ritual[]
Within the Waxing Moon Ritual, eight Stray Servants (“逸れ”のサーヴァント?) corresponding to the seven normal classes plus Ruler are summoned alongside the seven proper Servants. Masters who befriend these Stray Servants can convince them to join their side. Because they don't have Masters, the Stray Servants of this war are supplied magical energy by Leylines. As a result they are weaker than they would usually be and can't leave the territory that they are bound to without weakening even further.[1]
Development[]
Stray Servant is also the placeholder name given to the prototype version of Mash Kyrielight and Tachie, the original eighth Servant planned for inclusion in Fate/stay night.[2]

A heroine candidate that vanished without a trace during the plotting stage.
She was conceived of as an "abandoned puppy" type heroine, who killed her Master and went on a rampage.
As a Servant of the shield, she was going to be a rival to Saber, the Servant of the sword, but…
Just like Gilgamesh, she would have been a Servant that had remained behind after the previous Grail War.
Unfortunately, though, she had to be cut for the sake of keeping things manageable for the player.
After all, around this point, the plot itself was starting to stray. Not only Rider, but even Caster was a potential heroine candidate. It was terrifyingly chaotic.
Hmm? Fuji-nee? I don't know what you're talking about, Fuji-nee never had a main route even during the plotting stage.
