Voice-over introduction[]

Usagi: "The paths we walk in life are different for each of us. Some walk the land without a care in the world while some choose to take on burdens that would crush the spirits of most. The land cares little of which path you choose. But its inhabitants are another matter entirely. Clearly, this is not our land. Gennosuke and I came to visit old friends, but I fear now that our presence has done more harm than good."

Plot[]

In the Turtle Lair. Casey Jones, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael watch Leonardo as he trains vigorously in a blindfold. Everyone is worried about Leo's recent behavior. Casey, however, believes it is not a big deal. Leo then throws one of his katanas, piercing three candles into Raph's heavy punching bag and breaking it, and Raph goes ballistic. Casey and Mikey hold him back from having a violent encounter with Leo, as Leo angrily walks away and blows the candles. As Leo blows out the candles, Raph finally settles down after Master Splinter immediately tells him to cool it especially since guests are arriving. A portal opens, and Miyamoto Usagi and his ally Gennosuke emerge from it. Splinter and the Turtles are pleased to see them. Casey decides to catch up with them later after Gen had the nerve to call him a monkey.

The Turtles take their Usagi and Gen on a night-time tour of NYC. First, Mikey has them try hot dogs and all of them go sightseeing from the viewing Statue of Liberty, to a Yankees game, to watching the Subway, and Times Square. Gen is fascinated and amazed by the beauty of the city. As much as Usagi enjoyed the city, he prefers the simple pleasures in his world. Meanwhile, in a darkened alley of the Big Apple, another portal opens and a stout figure emerges. It is Kojima, an assassin from Usagi's world. Kojima opens a scroll and receives a message from Lord Hebi who tells the paid killer to painfully destroy Leo.

The Turtles, Usagi and Gen return to the lair to sleep. Early next morning, Leo wakes up to begin his training, only to see Usagi who wants to chat with him in private. Usagi expresses his concern over Leo's mental state. He points out to Leo that his eyes are betraying him as he chooses to carry the burden on his shoulders. Leo answers "someone has to carry it." Then the two spar. Leo then expresses to Usagi about his failure to save his family at his last confrontation with the Shredder and the fact he felt he wasn't good enough. Usagi shares with Leo that he failed to save his master when he was cut down in battle. The spar stops as Leo expresses he felt sorry for him and he didn't know that happened. Usagi tells Leo that failure and fear is apart of being a leader and warrior, but how it is dealt with is the true test of one's character. Leo is contemplative when Mikey bursts in and announces that Gen is missing.

Kojima (full form)

Kojima in the Turtles' universe.

On the streets above, Gen is walking boldly down the sidewalk, completely unconcerned with who might see him. A huge man with a pit bull approaches and is terrified by the sight of the anthropomorphic rhino. Undaunted, Gen complements the fellow on his attire. The man and his dog run away in terror.

Usagi and the Turtles head out to search for the gluttonous bounty hunter. Seeing as how it's now daylight, Leo suggests they should call Casey and ask for his assistance since they can't be seen. Raph calls Casey. Meanwhile Usagi asks Mikey how they'll find Gen in such a huge city. Mikey explains that Gen will be found very soon by the screams.

Sure enough, a woman is seen screaming. On the streets below, we see Gen emerge from a store, dressed like Rocksteady from the original 1987 TMNT series. People are taking pictures of him. A shocked crowd forms around the visitor, who is confused by all the attention. A police officer arrives and pulls out his gun, ordering Gen to put up his arms.

Gen is amused by the police officer and has no intention of surrendering. The cop issues his final warning. Usagi and the Turtles arrive on a nearby rooftop and are not happy to view the scene. Casey Jones arrives on his motorcycle - he's not happy with the situation either. Mikey and Raph distract the cop by pretending that a woman is being mugged in a nearby alley, giving Casey time to rescue Gen. As Mikey and Raph climb the fire escape, Kojima manages to break the fire escape causing them to fall, but Raph manages save himself and Mikey and the two climb to the top of the building. Meanwhile, Kojima reveals himself to Usagi, Leo and Don and challenges them. As Mikey and Raph get to the top, Kojima throws three bombs and the two ninjas fall through. The other-worldly assassin then grabs Don and tosses him into a wall, knocking him senseless.

Leo and Usagi are left as Kojima mocks their efforts. Usagi warns Leonardo, Kojima is the most talented weapons-master from his world. Leo explodes and attacks Kojima. However, Kojima blows some kind of powder into his face. Kojima then corners Usagi and prepares to skewer him. Meanwhile Gen and Casey are waiting for the others to return back to the lair. Leo and Usagi are struggling hard and Kojima manages to blind Leo. Meanwhile Raph manages to help Mikey up. Once Leo manages to see again, he sees Usagi struggling with Kojima as he was defending him. Leo picks himself up, shouts at the assassin to leave his family and friends alone, and attacks him. Then Don, Raph and Mikey now recovered, Usagi and Leo gang up on Kojima and Leo violently knocks the assassin out cold.

Cut to the Turtle Lair as Gen and Usagi prepare to leave. Gen explains that he will be able to share a rich bounty when they turn Kojima over to the authorities and he would love to see Las Vegas. Don remarks to Raph that Gen might see Las Vegas in a century. Meanwhile, as Usagi and Leo exchange their farewells, Usagi tells Leo that he needs to let go of his pain and guilt and that a true warrior accepts what they cannot change. Leo is not having it and states that he will decides how he must handle change. Splinter thanks Usagi for visiting and trying to help Leo. However it is revealed, Splinter asked Usagi to visit so he can try to reach Leo. Splinter fears Leo is going down a difficult path, a path Leo must travel alone. Usagi wishes Splinter luck. Usagi and Gen say their goodbyes and depart, just before Mikey tells the other Turtles not to let them leave through the portal because Gen stole all of his Silver Sentry comics, causing Mikey to freak out.

Quotes[]

Mikey: "I think all of you should just lay off the poor guy. I mean, it can't be fun. Always being the responsible one, and WE'RE the ones who really benefit. Raph's free NOT to think cause Leo does all the thinking for him, Don's free to dream, And I'm free to take it easy, all cause Leonardo is busy being responsible enough for all of us."

Miyamoto Usagi: "Failure, fear... In the lives we lead, these things are inevitable. How we deal with them, that is the true test of our character."

Leo: (As the assassin is about to finish off Usagi) NO! YOU WILL LEAVE MY FRIENDS, AND MY FAMILY, ALONE!!!!!

Trivia[]

  • When Gen disguises himself in human clothing, he looks very similar to Rocksteady from the 1987 TV series.
  • The assassin after Gen resembles a boar. The assassin is yet another nod to the 1987 series, with the boar assassin (Bebop) after a rhino (Rocksteady).
  • Some of the places that the Turtles bring Gen and Usagi are Yankee Stadium and Times Square.
  • Brian Maillard is credited as Kakera in this episode's casting sheet, but he does not appear in the episode at all.
