Genelia D’Souza recalls how Riteish Deshmukh’s midnight breakup text left her depressed and angry: 'I had made myself miserable till 9 in the morning'

Genelia D'Souza and Riteish Deshmukh, who have been married for 12 years, continue to share fun moments from their relationship. But there was one particular prank from Riteish took things too far. Recently, Genelia opened up about the prank Riteish played on her during their dating days, which left her feeling both depressed and later furious.
In the interview on Shreya Godhawat, Genelia revealed that on April Fool’s Day, Riteish texted her a breakup message before going to sleep.“When we were dating each other, it was April Fool’s Day, and he sent me a message saying, ‘We’re done,’ and he’s gone off to sleep,” she recalled.
Genelia, who read the message at around 2:30 in the morning, was left devastated, wondering what went wrong. “He used to sleep really late, and I used to sleep early. He sent me this at around 1 in the morning and had fallen asleep. I read it at 2:30 in the morning, and I am depressed. ‘What went wrong? What is this cheek and audacity?'” she shared.
The emotional turmoil continued until 9 in the morning when Riteish woke up, having forgotten about the prank entirely. “He woke up and called me, ‘Hi, what’s up?’ and I’m like fully, ‘I don’t think we should talk; I don’t want to talk to you,’” she said.

When she reminded Riteish of his late-night prank, he confessed it was an April Fool’s joke, leaving her fuming. Genelia, in disbelief, questioned him, “Who jokes about something like that?”
Despite the anger at the time, Genelia shared that Riteish made up for the mistake and praised him as a caring husband. “He has immense respect for women and his wife. Every time I have to shoot, he’s at home playing the homemaker. He does it with dignity and absolute acceptance,” she said, adding that he does everything wholeheartedly, without making it seem like he’s doing her job. “He’s a partner who does everything, and I really lucked out.”

The couple first met on the set of the 2003 film Tujhe Meri Kasam and tied the knot in 2012. They are now proud parents of two sons Riaan and Rahyl.
