Cliffside is the fifth chapter of Act 3 in The Devil in Me and the thirty-fifth overall.
The player controls Charlie/Mark as they venture toward the lighthouse.
3:32 A.M.[]
Hotel Grounds[]
Charlie grunts as he pushes open two wooden cellar doors and climbs a set of concrete stairs out of the hotel. He finds himself outside, and as he looks around he hears Mark yelling in the distance. He can explore the outdoor area he is in to find a 2 obol coin, a locked door allowing him to leave the area, and a locked fence gate with a crate behind it, which Charlie says he could use that to escape. Charlie must go around the gate and climb the wall behind it to unlock the gate from the other side and push the crate to a section of wall where there is a gap in the barbed wire.
Upon jumping down, Charlie must drop down several ledges to another fenced area, where he hears a noise in the distance and wonders if it is Mark. Charlie quietly calls for Mark, and must crouch under a tree, with Connie running across it just as he does so. Charlie can find a 5 obol coin in a puddle, which reveals that Connie is watching him from the bushes, before jumping over through a hole in the fence to reach another path.
The doors on both sides of the path are locked, and Charlie must climb up another ledge to find a way over the fence. As he begins climbing, Connie appears and barks at him, scaring Charlie. Charlie quickly climbs up and lands on the other side as Connie barks at him through the door. Connie then runs away, and Charlie angrily yells at him to fetch.
Island Path[]
- If Mark completed the final QTE in Pool, he slides down the cliff.
- If Mark failed the final QTE in Pool, he tumbles down the cliff, grunting in pain before getting up.
Mark finds himself on the island's shore, with stairs up the cliff to the right and a pier straight ahead. At the pier, Mark explore to find:
- A 5 obol coin on the dock.
- A camera lens in a drawer in the shack. If Mark still has his camera, he adds it to his camera to increase its depth of field.
- A button for the ferry in the shack. Upon pressing it, nothing happens, and Mark presses it more before holding his head in frustration. He then looks out the window at the lighthouse, and the Signal Help bearing updates to say that the ferry controls were disabled.
Going up the stairs, Mark must shimmy and crouch through several obstacles before reaching the cliff peak, where he finds that a bridge connecting two cliffs is collapsed. He can inspect one of the bridge's poles, and must reach the other side of the bridge in order to climb up it. After jumping down, Mark can find a dead rabbit covered in blood. Mark must go farther down, shimmy through a gap, climb up, and balance over a narrow strip of rock to get closer to the bridge. In the next area, he can find another 5 obol coin in a pool of blood that has splattered against the rocks. Mark must jump over two gaps, and then can go left and climb up to find a third 5 obol coin before going right and shimmying through another gap to reach the collapsed bridge. He must climb it to reach the top of the cliff.
At the top of the cliff, Mark finds himself outside of a fenced area, and must inspect the chained gate. Upon doing so, it is revealed that he is being stalked by something, and Connie suddenly appears, barking at him. As Connie forces him back toward the cliff edge, Mark picks up a rock and can choose to throw it at him.
- If Mark throws the rock at Connie, Connie pushes him over the ledge and runs away. Mark must complete a QTE to avoid falling.
- If Mark completes the QTE, and he climbs back up and shimmies around the fence.
- If Mark fails the QTE, he tumbles down the ledge, losing his monopod.
- If Mark does not throw the rock Connie, he slowly puts it down and then pets him, reading his collar, and asks how it ended up all the way out there. Mark shimmies around the fence and Connie goes under it, with Mark saying Connie makes it look easy. Connie runs away.
Charlie/Mark enters an area with an elevator, and can find a 10 obol coin in the section below (which Mark starts in if he fell down the ledge). If they try the button for the elevator, they are disappointed to find that it doesn't work. They must climb up and reach the top of the elevator in order to continue.
Charlie/Mark begins climbing down the ladder in the elevator shaft, only to fall when the ladder stops before the ground. They get up and find themself behind a fence in front of the curing house.
If Charlie is alive, he is suddenly attacked by Mark, and can complete a QTE to fight back.
- If the QTE is completed, Charlie elbows Mark in the ribs, and the two are surprised to see each other with Mark joking that his ribs are broken.
- If the QTE is failed, Charlie is knocked to the ground and yells at Mark to get away. Mark is surprised to see Charlie, who says that Mark nearly killed him, and Mark replies that he thought Charlie was Du'Met.
The two look at each other.
- If Erin did not find the edited tape in Silver Ash or died in the same chapter, Mark embraces Charlie and says he's glad they are both alive. Charlie says he nearly went up in flames, and Mark explains he saw it on a monitor and the whole place is wired.
- If Erin found the edited tape in Silver Ash and survived, Mark says he thought Charlie was dead and questions how he made it out there. Charlie says he nearly got fried and Mark says that he saw it. When Charlie questions how, Mark asks how Charlie survived.
Charlie asks where the others are and if they are safe.
- If Erin is alive, Mark says they were all separated.
- If Erin is dead, Mark says so, prompting Charlie to ask what he's gotten them into.
- If Erin died before Breathless, Mark adds that she was mutilated, horrifying Charlie.
- If Erin died during Breathless, Mark adds that he watched her suffocate, horrifying Charlie.
Mark says that Du'Met has the whole place rigged with traps, and Charlie says they have to get out of there and return to the ferry. Mark says that Du'Met disabled it and the group agreed to signal for help at the lighthouse. Charlie asks if Mark has any good news, and is relieved when Mark returns his lighter.
Charlie/Mark can shimmy through or go around the fence and explore the area outside the curing house to find:
- The locked door of the curing house. They see through the window that there is a hole in the roof that they must find a way up to.
- A business card next to a tree.
- A crate on top of the scaffolding. After pushing it off, it can be moved over to the hole in the curing house's roof near the locked door in order to enter.
Charlie/Mark can also go across the scaffolding and through a second floor window to enter a room and find a picture and a locked drawer. If Charlie is alive, he can use his business card to open it and find a secret.
Upon entering the curing house, a piece of the roof falls away, and if Charlie is alive, he lets Mark in. They enter the curing house, with Mark questioning the smell, and can inspect some bloody clothes on a curing table, a group of monitors showing security feed of the gardens, and the Animatronics Newspaper.
- If Charlie is alive, Mark says he saw a dog out there, and Charlie says he saw it too and it scared him. Mark says Charlie probably scared it away.
They are surprised by a buzzing noise, and a large pull-up door in the curing house begins to open. Charlie/Mark hide in some empty freezers as Du'Met enters. Du'Met begins to leave but notices the fallen piece of roof and instead looks around the curing house as a Keep Calm segment begins. Charlie/Mark whisper to stay quiet and peer at Du'Met through the freezers as he moves through the room with a knife.
- If the Keep Calm is completed, Du'Met leaves.
- If the Keep Calm is failed, Du'Met opens the freezer on the left.
- If Charlie is alive, Du'Met finds Charlie inside, and pulls him out and onto a curing table. He stabs Charlie to death before gutting him and plunging a meat hook into his chest, raising Charlie up to the ceiling. The player controls Mark for the rest of the chapter.
- If Charlie is dead, Du'Met finds nothing in the freezer and leaves.
The survivors get out of the freezers and can go through the rest of the curing house, first entering the next room and being horrified by all the bodies hanging from the ceiling. They can explore to find:
- Some medical curtains on the first floor. Pulling them back reveals a man being preserved with a clipboard a chart about body preservation nearby.
- APB Broadcast on a table on the first floor.
- A locked door on the first floor. Through it, they can see some planks leading over the water from the curing house to the rest of the island.
- A broken pulley chain on the first floor that would have been used to open a trapdoor below. Upon seeing that it is broken, Charlie/Mark is disappointed, and the camera reveals a metal box teetering on the floor above that can now be inspected.
- A crate that can be pushed over to reach the second floor.
- A locked box on the second floor. Charlie must use his tie clip to open it, and inside is a 10 obol coin.
- A wedding ring on the second floor identical to the one found in Pool.
- The metal box on the second floor. Charlie/Mark pushes it over and it breaks through the trapdoor, giving them access to a ladder that reaches the planks leading away from the curing house.
As they explore, if Charlie is alive, he explains that Du'Met is preserving his kills and considers them valuable trophies. Charlie says Du'Met seems to know a lot, and when Mark questions if they are dealing with more than one person, Charlie says Du'Met is just one very driven man.
After climbing down the ladder beneath the trapdoor, they reach the planks, and Mark goes across. As he reaches the end, one of the planks breaks, and he jumps to the end as it falls into the water. If Charlie is alive, he must balance on the one remaining plank to reach the other side.
- If Charlie reaches the other side quickly, he jumps over.
- If Charlie loses his balance, he falls onto the rocks below, dying as his lighter falls from his pocket. Mark calls after him.
- If Charlie takes too long, the plank breaks and Charlie falls onto the rocks below, dying as his lighter falls from his pocket. Mark calls after him.
The survivors look toward the lighthouse.
