Publisher's summary[]
As concepts for shows go, it's a good one. An adventurer and his friend travelling through all of time and space, righting wrongs and defending those who can't defend themselves. Yet, as its creator is about to discover, there are those who'd rather this show never existed.
What's so dangerous about 'Doctor Who'?
Plot[]
Ellery Quest pitches a play to Mr Darling at the Regal Theatre about the two-hearted Doctor and his new travelling companion. Although Mr Darling is unimpressed due it being neither grounded nor gritty, Quest continues to read sequences from his script until Mr Darling gets a telephone call and orders him to leave, although he initially asks for him to leave his script behind. He is unsure why he made that request.
Quest returns to his home in Soho and hears the Doctor and Valarie on the radio. They warn him that he is in danger and asks him to meet them at Covent Garden, but he flips his lucky coin and decides to stay. Two identical Mr Darlings burst in and chase him onto the street where he is stopped in the street by half a dozen other Mr Darlings. He jumps onto a bus and travels to Covent Garden where he meets the Doctor and Valarie, who are talking puppets in a booth, and claim that they are inside his mind. When Mr Darlings approach, Quest runs with the two puppets but drops the Doctor.
Hiding in a bar, Quest receives a blank telegram from Jeremy Castle, the same man who called Mr Darling, and Valarie tells him not to look at it. Mr Darlings arrive and Valarie distracts them whilst Quest escapes and finds a newspaper in which the Doctor has appeared as part of a comic strip, explaining that he and Valarie can manifest wherever there is a narrative thanks to psychic energy. Valarie too appears in the strip and they tell him to find a police box and fill it with his stories to restore the two of them. When he returns home, a Mr Darling reveals that he and Quest are fictional characters created by Jeremy Castle.
Overwhelmed, Quest enters a space of negative perception and Valarie, appearing on one side of his lucky coin, confirms that he is not real. On the other side is the Doctor, who explains that he and Valarie were beamed into a computer by the TARDIS's telepathic circuits and that Castle had been writing a biography on him in addition to writing about Quest. He asks Quest to erase any mention of him from the computer, leading Quest to return to the story and continue the narrative with Valarie's help. He runs from the Mr Darlings to a police box and time is rewritten by the erasure of the data on the Doctor, meaning that whoever caused the TARDIS to explode did not have access to the necessary information. As a result, the ship is saved.
The Doctor takes Valarie to the TARDIS library and shows her the new section dedicated to novels about Quest, originally written by Castle but later taken up by other authors. Although they were able to change time due to time being in flux, he cannot go back to save her mother.
