Drum was a gelding of Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak and was one his two horses in the King's Own.

Because of the presence of Veralidaine Sarrasri, the famed Wildmage, animals near her became infinitely more intelligent, almost like humans. This was the case also with Peachblossom, Crown and her flock, Jump, Hoshi, and other animals in the palace.

In the summer of 456 HE, Drum went with Third Company to examine the village of Haresfield, which was attacked by humans and centaurs. After Sergeant Volorin brought Graystreak, the centaur chief, to parlay with Lord Raoul, Drum and Peachblossom blocked him from leaving and skimping out on what he had to do for the village. As Graystream was a stallion, and the other two were geldings, he proclaimed this as an unnatural occurrence and that the humans had corrupted them.^[1]
