What makes him sympathetic?[]

  • His daughter Penny suffers from cancer and is forced to turn to armed robbery to pay for her treatment.
  • After accidentally killing Peter Parker's uncle Ben, he feels so much remorse that he surrenders to the Police.
  • After being released from prison, he is unable to find a job and is forced again to commit armed robberies.
  • His relationship with his family becomes strained and his ex-wife makes sure that he has no contact with their daughter.
  • By accident he falls into a pit where a group of scientists test if the sand is a good shield against radiation. This turns him into a mutant who is genetically blended together with the sediment.
  • After he discovers Spider-Man's real identity, Sandman apologizes to Peter Parker for killing his uncle and tells the whole story. Spider-Man sympathizes with him and forgives him for his mistake, allowing him to escape peacefully in the wind.
  • In No Way Home he just wants to go back home to his daughter but constantly interruptions haunt him.
  • Also in No Way Home, he is finally cured from his mutation and sent back to the Raimiverse. Peter again sympathizes with Flint and is happy that he is finally cured.
