Counter (カウンター, Counter) is Palutena's default Down Special Move. She enters a defensive stance and immediately retaliates if struck.

Overview[]

Palutena holds up her shield and shouts "Counter!" If struck, she will strike the opponent with her staff and deal 1.3x the damage of the countered attack with a minimum of 10%. Palutena's Counter is the slowest of all the counters in the game, being only active at frame 10, and possesses high ending lag if it does not trigger. It is also one of the few counters with a sourspot and deals low knockback, making it one of the weakest counters in the game. However, despite its weaknesses, it does grant Palutena a solid defensive option, particularly against pressuring characters.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Counter will only activate if Palutena is hit by a melee attack due to her Down Special incorporating her Reflect Barrier in the same move, which gives her greater flexibility in defensive options. Counter has a longer duration as well as less startup and end lag, but its knockback was reduced, making it a less reliable KO potential at early percents.

Origin[]

Counter is a stat-based power that Pit or a fighter can wield in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Using that power, the user will be under its effect temporarily. During the time the power is active, any attack that lands will be retaliated. This power also prevents knockback.
