Blade Dash and Octaslash are Sephiroth's up special moves.
Overview[]
Blade Dash[]
Blade Dash is Sephiroth's recovery move that he can initiate upon start-up. In a similar vein to Fox Illusion and Falco Phantasm, Sephiroth will dash forward in a straight line with lightning speed, striking anyone in his path. The trajectory of his dash can be aimed upon start-up between eight directions around him (much like all of the Star Fox characters' recoveries). Blade Dash can also automatically grab to edges and will not go past edges if performed on the ground.
Octaslash[]
Charging Blade Dash turns the move into Octaslash, an attack where Sephiroth will proceed to quickly slash his sword Masamune eight times as he moves in the inputted direction. Compared to Blade Dash, the move is slower but deals more damage. It also goes a slightly further distance than Blade Dash but does not automatically grab to edges. However, it has the big disadvantage of having twice the landing lag than Blade Dash's, making Sephiroth very vulnerable to counterattacks upon landing.
If performed, Sephiroth may say either "消え去れ" ("Disappear"), "愚かな" ("Foolish"), or "恐怖を刻もう." ("I shall carve terror.")
Origin[]
Blade Dash is a move that is original to Smash, but does bear a resemblance to the Flash attack that Sephiroth can do in Kingdom Hearts II and the Oblivion attack from the Dissidia Final Fantasy series.
Octaslash is one of Sephiroth's signature moves, first using it in his secret boss fight in the first Kingdom Hearts. He later uses the move in almost all of his subsequent appearances, including the Dissidia series (where it would be officially given the name Octaslash), in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII during a cutscene in his boss fight (but can also be used by the main character Zack Fair as a Digital Mind Wave), and in the third phase of the final battle against him in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Sephiroth also performs a variation of Octaslash in the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete during the film's climax where he stabs Cloud Strife eight times in the air.
