The War for Creation was a drawn-out conflict to prevent God from destroying the multiverse and all of reality. The oldest of primordial beings participated in this cosmic-scale conflict.

Background[]

This major conflict was ushered in by Chuck's fury at the Winchester brothers Sam and Dean, who refused to kill the nephilim Jack Kline[1]. As the brothers instead berate Chuck for all the suffering they went through for the sake of Chuck's story, God killed Jack. In retaliation, Sam used the Equalizer against Chuck, wounding both of them in the process. This further angered Chuck and declared the story over, and threatened the ultimate end.

Progression[]

God's Wrath[]

Ghostpocalypse[]

Immediately after declaring the end, God vanished. Day became night, and moments after, the nearby ground burst open. Damned souls rushed out of the ground--some entered nearby tombstones and caused zombies to arise, while some others flew farther away. In nearby areas, vengeful spirits and ghosts that were previously defeated by Sam and Dean began to manifest. The damned souls and demons threatened to spread across the land. The Winchesters and their allies, Rowena, Castiel, and a newly met demon Belphegor, were able to mitigate the exodus by erecting a magical barrier. A nearby town, Harlan, played a focal role as it was used as base of operations of the hunters, and its trapped inhabitants became target of the vengeful spirits. Multiple skirmishes between the hunters and the ghosts occurred during this period. Eventually, Rowena embraced Billie's prophecy that she would die at the hands of Sam. Using a spell, she sacrificed herself to draw out all the souls into her body. The witch continued to absorb the souls of hell as she threw herself down the hellmouth, which, thanks to her spell, closed shortly after it swallowed Rowena[2].

Sometime during the Ghostpocalypse, God sought out his sister the Darkness for help. However, Amara was content to enjoy life and did not want to be involved with Chuck[3].

Battle for the Equalizer[]

While the Winchesters were dealing with the demons and vengeful spirits unleashed from Hell, Chuck was beginning to plan his ending for Sam and Dean. Chuck sent glimpses of Sam and Dean killing each other in various manners, notably in scenarios that would have arisen from major choices such as succumbing to the corrupting influence of Lucifer, or the Mark of Cain. To further drive his desire, Chuck devised a plot where Sam and Dean rescued a girl from werewolf attacks. The werewolves were revealed to be brothers that ended up killing each other. In the aftermath, the girl accidentally tripped and fell on a the horns of a buck deer taxidermy. The girl died but soon opened her eyes and removed the antlers telekinetically. She revealed that she was Lilith, resurrected by Chuck, and sent to further discourage Sam and Dean, and to acquire the Equalizer. Lilith successfully retrieved the weapon and destroyed it. This removed one vulnerability of Chuck from the Winchesters' arsenal[4].

Standoff at Jaci's Red Wagon[]

Chuck wanted to continue to build his forces against the Winchesters. He sent Lilith to fetch the archangel Michael, who escaped the Cage when hell was torn open by Chuck. Michael did not take kindly to the summons being delivered by the demon. The archangel smote Lilith effortlessly. This display of power was detected by the prophet Donatello, who alerted the Winchesters. This allowed Sam, Dean, and Castiel to capture Michael and to convince him and Adam to join their side instead. The archangel aided them and revealed that the prison used against Amara during the first war could be replicated and used against Chuck.

Hunt for the Leviathan Blossom[]

One of the key ingredients for the spell was a Leviathan blossom, which can be found in Purgatory. Michael opened a rift to Purgatory, which would be used by Dean and Castiel. Although the two were successful, Sam, who remained on Earth, was lured by Chuck into a trap. Chuck revealed to Sam what would happen if they trap Chuck. Sam decided against using the spell. At that point, Chuck was able to heal his shared wound with Sam. Unhindered by the Equalizer wound, Chuck cursed the Winchesters and left the prime universe[5].

Sam and Dean realized their skills were taken away, their health started to decline and affect their performance, and their luck appeared to turn sour[6]. They embarked on a journey to reverse the curse that Chuck placed on them[7]. The brothers ran into Fortuna, who revealed the origin of the deities. Her bitterness and grudge against God eventually led her to restore Sam and Dean's status prior to Chuck's curse.

Alliance Against God[]

Jack's Quest and the Destruction of the Multiverse[]

Two major events happen concurrently as the war for creation continued to escalate. Billie, having formed an axis with the Shadow[1], has sent forth Jack from the Empty and back into prime Earth. Jack was to embark on a quest that would strengthen him until he was powerful enough to fight Chuck. As Jack went through the different parts of his quest[7], Chuck started wiping out the multiverse[8]. Billie became more closely involved with the Winchesters, strictly monitoring progress and warning against any deviations from her plan. During the second quest, the Shadow confirmed it was firmly against God, and while it is allied with Death, it has no problem being hostile to Castiel[9]. Meanwhile, Dean and Amara crossed paths. Amara did not want to actively betray her brother, but after some discussion, Dean was able to convince Amara to at least help contain Chuck while Jack was still getting stronger[10]. At this point, Billie, the Shadow, Team Free Will and Amara had their parts in countering Chuck. However, during the third and final quest, it was revealed that Jack would not survive the aftermath of Billie's plan. Unwilling to let Jack die, Sam tried to look for another solution.

Alliance Fractured[]

Standoff in Death's Reading Room[]

The alliance of Team Free Will and the other primordial beings proved to be short-lived as the hunters and Castiel uncovered more information about their allies. Seeking some answers and alternative plans, Sam used the Key to Death in an attempt to talk to Billie. However, Sam encountered the Shadow instead. The cosmic being has killed a lot of reapers in Death's reading room and it revealed that Billie was not giving it the answers it wanted. Sam was able to convince the Shadow to hand over God's death book to him. Consequently during this encounter, the Shadow also revealed Billie's ulterior plan of installing herself as the new God once Chuck and Amara are destroyed.

At that point Chuck has completed wiping out every other universe except for the first. Chuck returned to prime Earth and reached out to Amara, who tried to convince Chuck to preserve his creation. However, Chuck was not to be persuaded. After talking for a while, Chuck realized that Amara was preventing him from leaving so he could be trapped by Jack. Meanwhile, Sam was trying convince Dean to abort the plan because of the revelation the Empty gave. As Sam and Dean argued in the bunker hallway, Chuck revealed that not only was he aware of Death's plan, he helped orchestrate everything. Chuck also revealed to his sister that the Winchesters were not planning to imprison him, rather to kill him. Chuck also revealed to Amara that Dean planned to betray her. Though Dean could not hurt Amara, he could lie to her by withholding the fact that they meant to kill both Chuck and Amara. Disillusioned and in disbelief, Amara was convinced to unite with Chuck. As Chuck absorbed Amara's essence into him, he marched towards Team Free Will, and declared that he no longer cared about any of them. Chuck taunted the men into having fun watching Jack die before disappearing[11].

Standoff with Billie[]

Once Billie's ulterior motive was laid bare, the Winchesters and Castiel became belligerent to her. When she arrived in the bunker, they told her Chuck was aware of her plans. However, Billie insisted that the fault lay with the Winchesters. Unable to stop Jack's detonation, Billie sent the nephilim to the Empty, where the Shadow greeted him. Jack exploded, temporarily incapacitating the Shadow. Billie knew that despite the Shadow being weaker than God and the Darkness, it was vast enough to survive. The Shadow reformed after a while, and it got angry at Jack, who also survived the explosion. On Earth, Sam reluctantly gave up God's Death book to Billie. Just as the Shadow started to enact revenge on the nephilim, Billie brought Jack back to Earth. However, she did not want to release Jack to the Winchesters, as she found Jack still useful for Chuck's new ending. Dean attacked Billie with her own scythe, injuring her and forcing her to flee. Billie went back to her reading room and had a reaper put up wards against the Shadow[12]. Shortly after, certain refugees from Apocalypse world began to vanish without discernible cause. As Billie planned to correct the natural order after she establishes herself as the new God, this led Sam and Dean to believe that Billie was behind the people vanishing out of existence. As Sam, Jack, Donna, and Apocalypse-world Bobby gathered the hunters to protect them, Dean and Castiel brought the scythe with them and launched an offensive against Billie in her reading room. During the scuffle, Billie revealed that it was not her erasing people from reality, and that her guess was that God was responsible. Billie's injury turned out to be fatal, and it spurred her to take revenge on Dean before she dies. Dean and Castiel escape the reading room and into the bunker. Billie followed them into the bunker, taunting them as she tailed them. In a desperate bid to stop Billie, Castiel confessed his feelings for Dean. This allowed the angel to experience true happiness, triggering his deal with the Shadow. Having been granted permission to bypass the ward on prime Earth, the Shadow was able to open a portal to claim its dominion on Castiel. The Shadow also used the opportunity to capture Billie. The Shadow dragged both the angel and Death into the Empty. Meanwhile, Jack was been passively siphoning life force from nearby plants. Sam and Jack head out of their encampment. They are later joined by Dean, and it is revealed that there were no more other humans, or even animals, in the world.

Final Stand[]

Sam expressed guilt at the world paying the price for their disobedience to Chuck. The brothers met with Chuck, and offered to surrender and kill each other if Chuck agreed to restore the world. However, Chuck refused and wanted to take pleasure in the Winchesters' shame, suffering and loneliness. A few days after, Jack detected a presence aside from the three of them. They head out on the Impala. As they stopped for gas, they met a dog, which Dean named Miracle. Dean put Miracle into the Impala, but shortly after, the dog vanished. Dean saw Chuck smiling from afar before vanishing. Sam, Dean, and Jack continued to drive and reach a church named St. Michael's. Michael was inside the church, revealing he took refuge in there during the rapture. Michael was wary and refused to use his powers as he knew his allegiance to the Winchesters was known to God. The archangel also revealed that Adam did not survive the purge. While taking refuge, Michael read more about humanity's perception on God. Realizing that God was not what he and the angels preached out to be, Michael decided to help Sam, Dean and Jack.

Michael joined them in the bunker, where they asked him to open God's death book. The archangel was unsuccessful. Later, Dean received a call from Castiel, who asked to open the door for help. The call came from Lucifer, and although Dean shut the door, the archangel already made it inside. Lucifer claimed that he was sent by the Empty to retrieve the death book. Lucifer brought Betty, a reaper, with him. The archangel killed Betty, allowing the reaper to ascend as the new Death. As Betty read the death book by herself, Michael and Lucifer confronted each other. Before the archangels could go further, Betty arrived to share what she discovered. Betty began reading the death book when Lucifer snapped his fingers and killed Betty. Lucifer took the book while it was still open, and revealed God resurrected him, not the Empty. Sam and Dean lunged for Lucifer but he repelled them with telekinesis. Michael fought Lucifer, but the younger archangel got the upper hand while taunting his older brother. Lucifer tried to convince Jack to join him, but Michael stabbed Lucifer from behind with an archangel blade that Sam supplied.

Sam, Dean, Jack, and Michael devised a plan that would defeat Chuck. The four started a ritual that was promptly interrupted by Chuck. As it turned out, Michael tipped Chuck about the Winchesters' plan. Chuck was thankful but he did not forgive Michael's temporary allegiance with the Winchesters. Despite Michael's plea, Chuck killed his son. Chuck then proceeded to beat up Sam and Dean. Despite being injured badly, the Winchesters laughed. Chuck stopped and noticed Jack nearby. Chuck tried to smite Jack but the nephilim appeared impervious. Chuck tried a few more times to no avail, until Jack closed in and absorbed Chuck's powers. Sam and Dean revealed that they knew Michael would sell them out. They faked the plan and fed Michael false information to lure Chuck out, and let Jack absorb all the power released by the archangels and their father. Having consumed all of Chuck's powers, Jack restored Sam and Dean to full health. Chuck was impressed and expressed why Sam and Dean were his favorites. As he braced himself for revenge, Sam, Dean, and Jack simply left Chuck alone. Chuck begged them not to leave him like that, but the brothers refused. The Winchesters and Jack drove off, leaving Chuck groveling on the ground. Jack took on the role of the new God, with Amara in perfect harmony within him. As Jack worked to restore the damage done by Chuck, the threat to all of creation was thus ended.[13].

Aftermath[]

Jack restored everything that God had destroyed, including the Multiverse, before leaving the Earth.[13][14] After returning to Heaven, Jack resurrected Castiel from the Empty and reshaped Heaven into what it was supposed to be with his help.[15] He also put into place a no interference policy from on high, wanting mankind to make their own fate.[14]

Unbeknownst to the Winchesters, Chuck had a failsafe plan in case he was defeated in the war. Chuck created the Akrida, monsters that threatened all of existence and were to continue his work. Discovering this while detouring through the Multiverse as he drove through Heaven after his death,[14] Dean traveled into an alternate universe targeted by the Akrida where he helped the hunters of that world, including his own parents, in the Akrida War, breaking Jack's rules in the process. Ultimately, the Akrida were destroyed, ending Chuck's final attempt at destroying Creation and foiling his final plan.[16]
