“ | Why do you think I dumped your brothers and sisters in plain sight? Why do you think I let you escape? (...) Rule number one: you can't have a trap without bait. That brings us to rule number two. Which says that once the trap has been sprung, you don't need the bait anymore. | ” |
The Ambush at the Abandoned Church is an ambush of hunters Sam Winchester, Mary Winchester and Bobby Singer by a group of werewolves enhanced by Michael.
Progression[]
Prelude[]
In order to defeat a super-charged Lucifer, Dean Winchester makes a deal with the Apocalypse World version of the archangel Michael to become his vessel and battle Lucifer. Following Lucifer's death, Michael betrays his deal with Dean and takes full control of his body.[1] After deciding that monsters would make the perfect allies,[2] he begins experiments to enhance them using angel grace. During one such experiment, Michael allows vampire Lydia Crawford to escape and purposefully leaves the bodies of her nest mates to be found by the authorities. After perfecting the process, Michael forms an alliance with the werewolves of Philippe's pack to begin building an army of enhanced monsters to destroy humanity.[3]
While searching for the missing Dean, Sam discovers a news story about the bodies of the deceased vampires and investigates alongside his mother and Bobby Singer. They are able to locate Lydia who informs them of Michael's experiments and in exchange for them sparing her life, directs the three hunters to the abandoned church where Michael had conducted his experiments. Once the hunters are gone, Michael visits Lydia to reveal that he allowed her to escape to bait a trap for the hunters and kills Lydia.[3]
Battle[]
As Sam, Mary and Bobby explore the abandoned church, a werewolf bursts through the window. Though Bobby tries to shoot him, a female werewolf attacks and disarms him while the first werewolf attacks Mary. Sam shoots a third werewolf with silver bullets, only to discover that silver no longer effects the enhanced werewolves.
As the werewolves continue their attack on the outmatched hunters, Sam draws a machete and decapitates the werewolf attacking him, killing the werewolf and revealing decapitation as their weakness. Another male werewolf then attacks who exchanges blows with the monster, attempting to defeat him. The female werewolf knocks Bobby to the ground and savagely attacks him while Mary tries stabbing the werewolf she is fighting in the heart with a silver knife to no effect and is knocked to the ground.
Grabbing a small axe from the weapons bag, Mary rises to her feet, blocks the werewolf's blows by chopping him twice in the chest, sending the werewolf to the ground, stunned. Seeing the female beating on Bobby, Mary throws the axe into her back, sending her to the ground. Taking advantage of this, Bobby removes the axe and uses it to chop off the female werewolf's head while Mary draws a machete and decapitates the werewolf she was fighting before he can recover and Sam manages to decapitate his opponent.[3]
Aftermath[]
In the aftermath of the fight, the three hunters determine that they weren't bit and are relatively unharmed. Having never encountered werewolves that strong before or immune to silver, they are left shocked and confused by the ambush. Moments later, they are further shocked when Dean suddenly arrives, Michael free and with no memory of what happened to him or why Michael left.[3] As Sam returns to the Men of Letters bunker with Dean, Mary and Bobby remain behind to clean up the mess left by the ambush.[4]
Following this first encounter with Michael's enhanced monsters, the Winchesters soon after come up against enhanced vampires going after the alternate Kaia Nieves[4] and an enhanced djinn left by Michael as a trap for hunters.[5] Michael eventually reveals that he purposefully let Dean go as part of a plan to break Dean's spirit so that he can gain full uncontested control over his vessel, the real reason why Dean arrived at the church after the failed ambush.[6]
Trivia[]
- This ambush is the first time hunters go up against Michael's grace-enhanced monsters.
- Though the ambush occurs at an abandoned church, it is not the same one from the Battle of the Abandoned Church where Lucifer met his end.
