Street Fighter: Legacy is a live-action short fan film released as a tie-in to promote Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (2008).
Capcom are said to have "given their blessing" to the film, and the film was released on May 6, 2010.[1]
Plot[]
Taking place right before the events of the World Warrior tournament in Street Fighter II, the short follows Ryu after waking up from a nightmare of Akuma. While walking in the forest, he is followed by a mysterious warrior revealed to be Ken Masters, Ryu's old friend and sparring partner. The two have a match together using their signature moves, the Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku in the day time and night time in the rain. The film ends with the two in mid-air about to kick.
Cast[]
- Jon Foo as Ryu
- Christian Howard as Ken Masters
- Joey Ansah as Akuma
Production[]
The film is a Streetlight Films production, co-directed by Joey Ansah (of The Bourne Ultimatum) and Owen Trevor, produced by Jacqueline Quella and stars Jon Foo as Ryu, Christian Howard as Ken Masters, and Ansah himself as Akuma. Both Ansah and Howard are also the writers of the film who were previously flatmates who play Marvel vs. Capcom 2 together, Ansah also met Foo on the set of Batman Begins, as League of the Assassins members and approached him for the lead role, he suffered jet-lag due to flying in from the Far East.
During shooting, a silicon glove covered in flame gel that was literally set on fire was actually worn by Christian Howard when performing the beginning of the Shoryuken. He even mentions having false eyebrows to match Ken's long and spiky eyebrows in the games. When filming the fight scene, Jon Foo accidently punched one off. Howard also had claim to cut his foot but refused to bandage it due to continuity issues when editing and the fact that Ken never wore footwear in the games unless he was not wearing his Gi.
There are currently plans for a series and several cast members have already been locked down.
Film[]
Trivia[]
- The short-film got 4,994,453 views on YouTube.
- There is only one line of English, Ken says: "It's been a long time". The rest of the dialogue is Japanese. Ken says this because he hasn't seen Ryu since several years ago during the Street Fighter Alpha series.
- Akuma's live action debut. First time Ryu was played by a British actor and a Eurasain actor. Jon Foo is half Chinese half Irish. First time Ken was played by a British actor. Joey Ansah's directorial debut and first time in a non-english speaking role and first time speakng Japanese only.
- This is the first time a Street Fighter adaptation only features actors from England. Ironically Ken Masters is an American who's descent is being three quarters Japanese and has some Anglo-Scottish in him, yet Christian Howard is an Englishman who is fully Caucasian. Akuma and Ryu on the other hand are full Japanese but both are portayed by mixed-raced actors: By descents, Joey Ansah being Ghanaian/English and Jon Foo being Chinese/Irish.
- Jon Foo played as Jin Kazama in Tekken (2009) earlier that same year. Both Street Fighter and Tekken are rival companies in fact Jin and Devil Jin are parallel to Ryu and Evil Ryu.
