Publisher's summary[]
If Wedge Antilles can't persuade the alien Mrlssi to sell their cloaking device to the New Republic, the result could be disaster. And that's just what Wedge expects when he discovers that the negotiating party includes Loka Hask -- the pirate chieftain who killed Wedge's parents!
Plot summary[]
Members of Rogue Squadron attend a concert by the band Ghost Jedi at The Soundmound, commenting on the precise and mathematical nature of their music. Their Twi'lek server, Koyi Komad, reveals that a physicist named Rorax Falken wrote the music for his students to perform. Tycho Celchu arrives and relays the tale of his earlier encounter with the Ante-Endor Association and how he was saved by a mysterious Jedi-like figure. Though the others ridicule him, Komad tells the squadron the story of a ghost Jedi murdered years ago on Mrlsst that supposedly haunts the campus of the academy. As Komad offers to take Wedge Antilles to the site of the Jedi's murder, the band's holographic feed distorts, implying a blockage of the transmission. That night, an Imperial shuttle descends towards Mrlsst's surface.
The following morning, Komad takes the squadron to the site where Jedi Taj Junak was told to have been incinerated after surrendering to the Empire in order to protect the academy. The incident has long since dissuaded the native Mrlssi from engaging in politics. Gade Yedan arrives to inform Antilles that the council to decide the ownership of Mrlsst's secret "phantom ship" cloaking device will meet that day. At that moment, Rorax Falken passes by in a hoverchair; Dllr Nep enthusiastically chases after the man but is knocked down, causing Groznik to attack Falken, but is reigned back by Elscol Loro. At the council, Antilles discovers that the Empire is represented by Loka Hask, the former pirate captain responsible for the death of his parents.
Antilles reflects on how is parents, Jagged and Zena Antilles, died protecting a Corellian space station during a pirate attack, sacrificing themselves but saving hundreds of lives, including Wedge's and Booster Terrik's. A young Wedge Antilles takes a Z-95 Headhunter to confront the pirates, and though he succeeds in destroying their ship, Hask escapes, but a parasitic Corellian limpet attaches itself permanently to the left side of his face.
In the present, the council deliberates on whether the Phantom Project will be given to the New Republic or the Empire. Meanwhile, a team of masked infiltrators affiliated with the Empire and led by Yedan steal the codes to the project, killing a student and destroying the safe in the process. News of the theft reaches the council and security footage seemingly reveals that Tycho Celchu was among the infiltrators. With the rebels apparently behind the attack, Antilles is arrested.
