Sullustese[2] was the liquid, chattering tongue spoken by the Sullustans,[1] diminutive humanoids that came from the planet of Sullust.[3] Lando Calrissian[4] and Leia Organa, both humans, understood Sullustese.[2]
Examples of Sullustese phrases[]
- Ah-the-yairee u-hareh mu-ah-hareh.[5]
- Deh-te'ill DOU![5]
- Eetuu achaa doo ahmtee vee an…?[6]
- Lamou-be-o-tee.[5]
- Lor-ac!! Lor-ac!![5]
- Mu-ah-hareh mu-kay, huh? E-mutee bit-chu me![5]
- Mu-the gate-oh…[5]
Behind the scenes[]
Sullustese first appears in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi as the words that Nien Nunb says to Lando Calrissian during the Battle of Endor.
Nunb was portrayed by Kipsang Rotich, who, according to Ben Burtt, is a Kenyan whose native language is "Hyah".[7] While recording Rotich speaking randomly in his language, Burtt experimented by giving to him Nunb's actual lines in English, to read in his language; because of the time pressure, and Burtt's satisfaction with their sound, they passed as they were into the soundtrack.[8] As such, some of the Sullustese phrases that Nunb says to Calrissian, were understandable to audiences who are speakers of that language, and were meaningful in the context of the action.[8][9] Nien Nunb also spoke lines in the Kikuyu language.[9]
