"…everything in this series is driven by the decisions Phasma made in The Force Awakens, and her trying to 'clean up' after those decisions. Phasma is a character that is, above all, looking out for number one. So she will do whatever it takes to make sure she comes out alive, on top, and pristine."
―Kelly Thompson[3]

Plot summary[]

Book I, Part I
CAPTAIN PHASMA
General Organa's Resistance forces have mounted a
direct attack on the First Order's most powerful
weapon, Starkiller Base.

A small assault team consisting of Han Solo,
Chewbacca, and former stormtrooper FN-2187,
now a Resistance fighter known as Finn, has
infiltrated the base to lower its defense shields.

While Starkiller's planet-destroying superweapon
is charging, Captain Phasma is forced at
blasterpoint to lower the base's defensive
shields, allowing Resistance forces to attack in
full. The trio then forces Captain Phasma into a
garbage chute.

Phasma does not intend to stay there long....

During the Battle of Starkiller Base, Captain Phasma initiates an audio recording of the final moments of Starkiller Base after escaping from the garbage compactor on Level Six. Seeking to cover up her unwilling role in the superweapon's destruction, Phasma proceeds to the nearest computer access point under the pretext of ascertaining how the First Order's shield defenses had been penetrated. As the starfighter battle above rages, Phasma navigates through the explosions and carnage.

Upon reaching the computer she has used to lower the deflector shields under duress, Phasma deletes all records indicating that she had disengaged the shield defense under duress. While checking to see that nobody else has accessed the computer systems, Phasma discovers that Lieutenant Sol Rivas had accessed the defense shield files. In order to cover her complicity in the station's destruction, Phasma blames Rivas for lowering Starkiller Base's shields and proceeds to hunt him down. She sights Rivas on Level Two of the South Platform and tries to shoot him but he escapes.

As Starkiller Base collapses around her due to the ruptured fuel cells, Captain Phasma uses a grappling gun to create an improvised flying fox and escape to the surface. On the surface, she encounters several stormtroopers whose leader FN-1728 informs her that General Hux is being evacuated. Phasma orders FN-1728 to man his post unless ordered otherwise.

Phasma treks through the snow and battle debris in pursuit of Rivas, who heads towards an auxiliary hangar. At 15:25 hours, Phasma witnesses Kylo Ren dueling with an unknown opponent, who turns out to be Rey. As the planet disintegrates, Phasma narrowly avoids falling down a chasm into the magma below. Phasma chases Rivas, shooting at him but missing due to a second chasm that emerges at front of her. Phasma leaps over the chasm and reaches the auxiliary hangar, only to discover that Rivas has escaped on a TIE/fo space superiority fighter.

Inside the hangar, Phasma meets the First Order TIE Fighter Pilot TN-3465 and enlists her services in tracking down Rivas in the remaining TIE/sf fighter. They are accompanied by the BB unit BB-K8, who was performing a data update on TN-3465's fighter. After escaping the destruction of the planet, Phasma briefs TN-3465 about their mission to hunt down Rivas, claiming that he allowed Starkiller Base to be destroyed. Phasma then ends her audio report.
