Synopsis[]
The episode starts off at the Bikini Bottom Mall, SpongeBob and Patrick try on shirts that read "Best Friend" with arrows pointing to their sides. When they stand beside one another, their shirts point at each other. However, they discover that when either of them faces a different direction, the arrow points elsewhere, thus "sending out the wrong signals." Annoyed with their antics, the security guards kicked SpongeBob and Patrick out of the mall. In seeking out new friendship clothes, the pair finds a group of citizens donning traditional military uniforms. Mistaking the uniforms for "matching outfits," they are taught that the fish are participating in a reenactment of the The Battle of Bikini Bottom. When SpongeBob reveals that he is unaware of the historical event, Patrick erroneously recounts the conflict, (sounding like he was part of it too) between two supposed factions: the clean, obsessed with personal hygiene, and the dirty, unconcerned with such matters.
SpongeBob, upon realizing that Patrick sympathizes with the filthy side, expresses his disgust. He didn't realize it when they went out for ice cream, and had Krabby Patties at Fancy!. The two begin to argue, to the annoyance of the fish trying to recreate the actual battle. SpongeBob and Patrick appropriate uniforms and engage in their own reenactment of Patrick's imagined war, driving the fish away. SpongeBob and Patrick commence their battle, exchanging a series of volleys: SpongeBob attempts to bolster Patrick's cleanliness, while Patrick attempts to defile SpongeBob's sanitary nature. At the Krusty Krab, while SpongeBob is still screaming because he is scared from Patrick's booger, Patrick traps him, but unfortunately SpongeBob throws onions directly at Patrick's eyes, causing him to cry. Next Patrick makes fun with Patty Socks, but SpongeBob doesn't really like it. Later he unleashes his ultimate rage by turning red and inflating himself like a balloon, creating an explosive blast that sends Patrick into the dumpster. This culminates in a standoff in which SpongeBob consumes a soap bar and prepares to pelt Patrick with soap bubbles shot through his pores. Patrick, in retaliation, picks up a dumpster and hurls it at SpongeBob as he starts his assault. The bubbles scour Patrick off his feet just as the dumpster lands on SpongeBob.
In the aftermath, Patrick is made squeaky clean and SpongeBob is covered in filth. As they reflect upon the copious amounts of cleaning/soiling that it will take to return them to their respective states of tidiness/mess, they realize that this only means that they are provided an opportunity to indulge in what they each love to do. As they reconcile, the fish return, intolerant of a stalemate. SpongeBob gives a sermon on the duality of their conflict, and makes a case for neutrality on the basis that one side cannot exist without another to provide reference to each other. The fish dismiss SpongeBob's message, forgoing the frilliness of reconciliation for "more manly" pastimes. Satisfied, SpongeBob and Patrick walk into the sunset to end the episode.

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode was on TurboNick two days before it premiered on TV.
- This episode was paired up with "Banned in Bikini Bottom" during its first airing in the Super Stuffed Nicksgiving Weekend 2007, but has since been re-airing with "20,000 Patties Under the Sea."[2]
- The episode title is similar to that of the video games Battle for Bikini Bottom and Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated. However, it is completely unrelated to the video games.
- Although it is not named in the episode, production artwork confirms that the ice cream restaurant in SpongeBob's flashback is Goofy Goober's Ice Cream Party Boat. The background art for Goofy Goober's in this episode was entirely redrawn instead of reusing backgrounds from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.[3]
- The reason that this episode doesn't contain any objects related to the restaurant is because of the "firewall" between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2014 that prevented the show from using characters and objects from the movie.
- The close-up of SpongeBob's teeth was featured in the SpongeBob SquarePants online game Cavity Crisis.
- In this episode, Patrick says he has never washed his hands. However, in the episode "Something Smells," Patrick is seen washing his hands in the movie theater bathroom.
- Contrary to this episode, Patrick has brushed his teeth before in previous episodes, as seen in "Dumped" and "Rise and Shine."
- SpongeBob says that Patrick does not have a nose, however, he is shown to have one in "Wet Painters" and "That's No Lady."
- Patrick has been clean in other episodes (such as "Shanghaied") and SpongeBob is dirty in other episodes like "Gary Takes a Bath."
- In this episode, it is shown that Patrick's eyes are navy blue, although in "Wormy" and "Oral Report," his eyes are olive green.
- This is the second episode to have a title card background on a pirate map. The first is "Arrgh!"
- This is the second episode where SpongeBob and Patrick are against each other. The first is "The Fry Cook Games."
- The ending is also similar to "The Fry Cook Games," when SpongeBob and Patrick become friends again and they walk off into the sunset.
- If counting this episode segment and its sister in one episode instead of separate segments, the previous and next episodes are both specials in-between this episode.
Dub facts[]
- In the Indonesian version, these scenes below were all cut/omitted/skipped due to either time constraints or considered disturbing filthiness:
- The second flashback scene involving Patrick and SpongeBob themselves was omitted after Patrick says, "Does that bother you, huh, SpongeBob?," it was immediately skipped to SpongeBob replied with "Frankly, yes, Patrick, that does bother me."
- The scene where SpongeBob does a pedicure to Patrick and Patrick counters it by exhaling his bad breath to SpongeBob were also cut.
Cultural references[]
- The Battle of Bikini Bottom is a parody of the American Revolutionary War, the soldier’s uniforms. The red-coated soldiers have British accents in the flashback and the blue coats have American accents.
Errors[]
- In the French opening credits, Dani Michaeli is credited as a writer instead of Eric Shaw.[4]
- Alan Smart is also mistaken for an animation director instead of Andrew Overtoom.
- Incidental 40 is first shown to be on the clean side in one scene, then later he is shown on the dirty side.
- In the scene with the Bikini Bottomites firing soap and trash with their cannons, some of the trash lands in the air, so it appears floating.
- As Incidental 37A says, "That's not what happened," one of Patrick's eyebrows are missing until he turns his head.
- In one scene, SpongeBob's eyelashes disappear for a split second.
- SpongeBob plays "got your nose" with Patrick despite the fact that Patrick has no nose, which SpongeBob later mentions when Patrick says, "It's booger time."
- After SpongeBob pedicures Patrick, the chair and bucket of water in the background disappear.
- SpongeBob paints Patrick's toenails red. After Patrick turns and says to SpongeBob "You sick little monster, face my morning breath!," the red nail polish is gone for the rest of the episode.
- When Patrick loses his armpit hair, he coughs and chokes audibly, even though his mouth does not move.
- When Patrick says, "The gloves are off now. It's booger time," he takes his starfish "glove" off to show that he has a human hand. But when Patrick grows a nose, the "glove" is on again. Then when Patrick picks his nose, the glove is off once more.
- When SpongeBob is running in Jellyfish Fields and saying, "Ahhh, booger!," his white teeth flickers both yellow and white for a few seconds.
- During the scene when Mr. Krabs runs into the kitchen looking for gold, the door actually opens by itself before Mr. Krabs pushes it.
- The front walls of the Krusty Krab break before Patrick is flung out of the restaurant by SpongeBob.
- When Patrick is thrown out of the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket located across the street doesn't appear.
- The exact same error occurs when SpongeBob and Patrick run to the Krusty Krab.
- When Patrick is holding the dumpster, his teeth are transparent for one frame.
- When SpongeBob comes out of the dumpster all dirty, he does not have mud on his eyeballs. When he mentions he has to disinfect them, the mud appears, and when he and Patrick make up, the mud disappears for the rest of the episode.
