Synopsis[]
One night, SpongeBob has a dream about the sky raining Krabby Patties and realizes that he is hungry. He gets up to make himself a Sea-Nut Butter and jellyfish jelly sandwich, but falls asleep after taking the first bite and leaves the refrigerator open, causing his entire house to freeze overnight. By morning, he develops the suds, an illness that causes him to sneeze bubbles. Gary tells SpongeBob he should stay home, but SpongeBob denies the fact that he's sick and goes to work anyway. SpongeBob is unable to keep up with his work, and when Mr. Krabs learns from Gary that SpongeBob has the suds, he orders his fry cook to go home and rest.
Back at home, SpongeBob decides he needs help and calls upon Sandy to take him to the doctor. Shortly after, he is visited by Patrick, who gives him a third-hand account of the doctor's office, describing it as a horrible place full of torture devices and outdated magazines. Terrified, SpongeBob asks Patrick to be his doctor instead. Patrick starts by plugging up all of SpongeBob's holes to prevent bubbles from coming out, causing SpongeBob to inflate every time he sneezes.
After several more "treatments," Sandy arrives at the house. Patrick tries to hide SpongeBob from her to no avail. Sandy says that SpongeBob needs to see a real doctor, but Patrick assures her that his "patient" is fine, leading to a squabble. In the commotion, SpongeBob is sent bouncing away and comes to a stop in front of the Krusty Krab. He sneezes violently, blasting the corks out of his holes and releasing a massive amount of bubbles, destroying the restaurant, much to Mr. Krabs' annoyance.
Sandy then takes SpongeBob to a real doctor. He prescribes the "sponge treatment," which is performed by a human hand named Hans. The treatment involves being used to clean various objects and people, which SpongeBob enjoys greatly. Afterward, SpongeBob is cured and receives a giant lollipop. Wanting a lollipop of his own, Patrick pretends to also have the suds by blowing a bubble with SpongeBob's bubble jar. The doctor tells "Dr. Patrick" that they have a "special treatment" awaiting him. Hans returns and uses Patrick to clean a cactus and toilet as a punishment for worsening SpongeBob's illness by impersonating a doctor. Patrick ends the episode by crying out, "Wait! This doesn't seem right!"

Trivia[]
General[]
- The title card background for this episode is similar to that of "Bubblestand," except that the colors are green, blue, and light blue instead of blue and purple, there are no bubbles, there are orange speckles added, and there is bamboo added.
- This episode has the same exact opening credits as "Sleepy Time," its sister episode.
- There is a book based on this episode named SpongeBob Goes to the Doctor. Some of the plot is altered in the book. However, the book has a few things that are different from the episode. SpongeBob gets the suds when he wakes up, his skin was still yellow instead of pale, Sandy does not wear her spacesuit when she gets a call from Patrick, SpongeBob is given some medicine instead of the Sponge Treatment, and Patrick is seen running away after he finds out that he was reading an old magazine.
- According to an interview in an issue of Nickelodeon Magazine, SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, was very sick at the time of recording the lines for this episode. This made SpongeBob sound genuinely sick as well.
- Suds is a parody of the common cold.
- Contrary to common misconception, it is not possible to come down with a cold by simply being exposed to cold temperatures, which is how SpongeBob caught the suds. The worst condition that one can get from long exposure to the cold is hypothermia.
- This is one of the shortest times SpongeBob is seen at the Krusty Krab as he is sent home by Mr. Krabs for having the suds.
- If SpongeBob was sent home sick, then Mr. Krabs should have hired a temporary replacement cook to take over until he returns. In the series, in SpongeBob's absence, Mr. Krabs or Squidward typically prepare the orders instead.
- "My leg!:" Everyone running panicked in the Krusty Krab when they think SpongeBob sneezed on their food.

"Don't touch me, I'm sterile!"
- Hans does not show his full body in this episode or other episodes, as his actor declined to return in person because of other work.[citation needed] He does only portray his hand.
- Objects Hans washes using SpongeBob during the Sponge Treatment:
- A showering man's back and foot
- A dish
- A car
- A floor
- Objects Hans washes using Patrick during the latter's special treatment:
- A cactus
- A toilet
- The man who was in the shower during SpongeBob's treatment is Tom Kenny.
- He is seen again in "Neptune's Spatula."
- The car being washed during SpongeBob's treatment is a 1992 Honda Civic.
- The toilet that Patrick is washed with is a 1995 American Standard Madera toilet.
- SpongeBob sneezes 19 times.
- SpongeBob mentions his experience with the suds again in "Whelk Attack."
- There is a book based on this episode called SpongeBob Goes to the Doctor, also known as SpongeBob Gets the Suds!
- There is also an online game based on this episode called Deep Sea Surgeon.
- This episode marks the first for several things:
- The first SpongeBob SquarePants title card to have bubbles as text.
- The first time that none of the title card is written in the standard font (although the first two words of "Home Sweet Pineapple"'s title weren't written in the standard font).
- The first appearance of SpongeBob's wringer (though he does not use it here).
- The first episode where the Krusty Krab appears without Squidward.
- The first episode where Patrick is the main antagonist.
- The first appearance of Hans outside of the theme song.
- The first time Gary was seen inside the Krusty Krab.
- This is the last episode to play the track "Merlins Hill."
- This episode was paired up with different episodes in different marathons:
- On the March 29, 2003 airing, this episode was paired up with "Something Smells."[2]
- During the Best Day Ever marathon, this episode was paired up with "Gary Takes a Bath."[3]
Dub facts[]
- In the Indonesian dub, all the live-action scenes were cut due to time constraints.[citation needed]
- In the European Portuguese dub, both this episode and "Bubblestand" are officially called "Bolhas," which translates to "Bubbles." Netflix distinguished the episodes by adding the Portuguese onomatopoeia "Atchim..." before this episode's translated title.
- In the Italian dub, the part where SpongeBob gets treated is cut.
Cultural references[]
- The premise of SpongeBob asking Patrick to be his doctor, as well as the moment where Patrick equips rubber gloves and exclaims "Don't touch me, I'm sterile!" is a reference to the sitcom The Honeymooners; in the episode "A Matter of Life and Death," Ed Norton (portrayed by Art Carney) says the line "Don't touch me, Ralph - I'm sterile!" after Ralph Kramden (portrayed by Jackie Gleason) asks him to pose as his doctor.
- A screenshot from the scene where Patrick says the line "Don't touch me, I'm sterile!" is featured on the protective case of The SpongeBob SquarePants Experience: A Deep Dive into the World of Bikini Bottom.
Errors[]

The front path leading to Squidward's house is missing the wooden planks door steps.
- In the opening establishing shot, the wooden planks door steps on the front path leading to Squidward Tentacles' house are missing.
- When SpongeBob is making his seanut butter and jelly sandwich, the jelly is already on the bread when he opens it.

The front path leading to SpongeBob's house is missing the green steps.
- In real life, leaving a refrigerator open does not freeze the house. It instead would let out the cold insulation used to keep the food stored inside fresh, and leaving the fridge open too long could cause the food to be spoiled.
- During a shot of SpongeBob's house at night before it becomes frozen the next morning, the green steps on the path leading to the front entrance of house are missing. When SpongeBob's house is shown frozen in the morning, the green steps on the front path are back.
- This error also occurs in "Prehibernation Week."
- When SpongeBob first slides into his now-frozen bedroom, the blanket hangs off of the bed. However, in the close-up shot where SpongeBob is on the bed, the blanket is now completely lying on top of the bed.

SpongeBob's nose is not sticking through his underwear.
- When SpongeBob puts his underwear over his mouth, his nose is not sticking through his underwear like it was in "Pickles."

SpongeBob's left eyeball turns black for a split second.

Mr. Krabs' nose is the wrong shade of red.
- When Mr. Krabs first walks into the Krusty Krab kitchen, his nose is the same shade of red as his skin instead of darker.
- When SpongeBob begins to give the Krabby Patty and starts to sneeze, his left eyeball turns black for a split second.

SpongeBob's visible eyelashes mistake.
- When SpongeBob says, "In fact, I'm gonna call Sandy and tell her not to come! Thanks, Dr. Patrick!," SpongeBob blinks his eyes a couple times, but his eyelashes are still seen.
- When Patrick tries to make SpongeBob feel better, one of the things that he does is pulling his buck tooth out with the door. After that, the rest of the episode shows SpongeBob with two buck teeth again.

Patrick's real house disappears.
- In the shot when Patrick's "second house" is shown, Patrick's real house is gone.

Patrick's eyebrows are connected to each other.
- When Sandy and Patrick are arguing, Patrick's eyebrows are attached to each other.
- As the inflated SpongeBob ball begins to roll down the hill, it leads straight for downtown Bikini Bottom. Then, it heads for the Krusty Krab somehow.
- When SpongeBob comes rolling down and crashing into the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket located across the street is nowhere to be seen.

The five flags on the Krusty Krab are missing before it gets destroyed. The road leading to the Chum Bucket is also missing.
- Before SpongeBob's sneeze destroys the Krusty Krab, the five maritime flags are missing from the Krusty Krab and a flower was on the left-hand side of the Krusty Krab. However, after he sneezes, the flags mysteriously reappear among the wreckage of the destroyed restaurant, and the flower is gone.
- When SpongeBob gets the suds, his voice sounds raspy. But when he screams, his voice sounds normal. This happens when he realizes that the fridge was open, when he flies around his house, when he gets scared of the doctor, when Patrick takes the bandage off, and when he starts rolling toward the Krusty Krab.
- Throughout the episode, SpongeBob's clothes are discolored (including his shoes being gray instead of black).
- They turn back to their normal color once SpongeBob is cured.
