2004 (MMIV) was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar that started on a Thursday.

The year aired only 7 episodes from season 3 in the United States and had a theatrical film on November 19. After this, no new episodes would air until May 6, 2005. This is the second leap year in a row to have a 6-month hiatus between April and October. This happened for the first time in 2000, which was also a leap year. It is the third shortest year for SpongeBob, aside from the previous year 2003, and 2014.

Creator Stephen Hillenburg wanted 2004 to be the last year of SpongeBob with the movie ending the series,[1]

Despite this, a fourth season entered production in mid-2004, some months before the release of the movie.

The season 3 episodes were made in 2002 and they were first aired in South Korea and Canada during that year.

According to Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke and the rest of the crew, four episodes were in production for season 4 this year and were ready to be broadcast in early 2005.
