2001 (MMI) was a common year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar. This year saw the beginning of the third season and the conclusion of the first season.

In terms of production, the second half of season 2 ("Pressure" - "Squid on Strike") and the early part of season 3 ("The Algae's Always Greener" - "Can You Spare a Dime?") were produced.

"Shanghaied" aired on March 9, but its partner episode, "Gary Takes a Bath" didn't air until June 2002 on Nicktoons, and not on the main Nickelodeon channel until the following year.

An episode from all three seasons aired this year. The next time that three seasons aired episodes within the same year would happen in 2009, with seasons 5, 6, and 7. And also 2017, with seasons 9, 10, and 11, and similarities with 2021 with the original show, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, and The Patrick Star Show.

"Hooky" and "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II" are the only season 1 episodes to premiere this year. "Just One Bite" and "The Bully" are the only season 3 episodes to premiere this year.

This year was the first year where episodes premiered in the 21st century and 3rd millennium.
