Storyline[]

Part 1 (Aincrad arc)[]

In 2022, gamers throughout Japan rejoice at the release of the new full-dive VR system, NervGear, and the subsequent release of the first VRMMORPG for the system, Sword Art Online.

Kazuto Kirigaya, also known by his avatar name Kirito, is one of the luckier ones who was able to participate in the beta for Sword Art Online, and thus was automatically given one of the first 10,000 copies of the game. Kirito dives into the virtual world of SAO, the gigantic floating castle known as Aincrad, and is already having the time of his life, but that fun is soon cut short.

Kirito, his new friend Klein, and the rest of the 10,000 players realize something important is missing from the game's menu: the log out button. It isn't long before everyone is informed by the developer of SAO and the NervGear, Akihiko Kayaba, that this isn't a defect, it's how the game was designed. Things take a turn for the worse when Mr. Kayaba informs the players that if they die in the game, or if their NervGear were to be removed by anyone in the real world, the headset would fry their brain, thus killing them for real. There's only one way for all the players to escape SAO safely, by making it to the 100th floor of Aincrad and defeating the final boss.

Now Kirito, along with his partner Asuna and their friends, are fighting their way through Aincrad to reach the final floor, clear the game, and get back to the real world, with only one rule: stay alive no matter what. Because in the virtual world of Sword Art Online, if you die in the game, you die in real life.
