Biography[]

He is a paternal cousin of the DiMeo family capo Larry Barese. Albert was made acting capo of the Barese crew when Larry was sent to jail awaiting trial for racketeering.

When DiMeo capo Richard "Richie" Aprile wanted to make a move against Anthony "Tony" Soprano, he approached Albert (who was acting capo) for support, expecting sympathy since both of them had asked Tony for control over garbage routes and been rejected. Albert declined and once Corrado "Junior" Soprano Jr. found out that Richie couldn't get Albert's support, he decided it was in his best interest to side with Tony instead of Richie. As such, Junior informed Tony about Richie's intent to make a move against him.

The Barese crew's contest for the routes continued as Albert was briefly involved in a "garbage war" with fellow DiMeo capo Ralph "Ralphie" Cifaretto. This dispute disturbed Tony a great deal, primarily because it was making headlines due to the fires being set by those involved. Tony settled the dispute between the two at a stand-up meeting in his backyard, in which Tony said, "No more fires."

Albert was also present at DiMeo soldier Eugene "Gene" Pontecorvo's card game when Giacomo "Jackie" Aprile Jr., Dino Zerilli and Carlo Renzi tried to rob it. He reentered the room not knowing about the hold-up and was nearly shot by Carlo walking in, inadvertenly causing the gang's getaway driver Matush to drive off and starting a shootout between the mobsters and robbers. Christopher "Chris" Moltisanti and Albert caught up with Dino as he tried to run away and, despite recognizing him and his pleas for his life, shot him dead. It was also at Albert's birthday party that the infamous "weight" remark was said by Ralph Cifaretto about Ginny Sack.

Albert also has a reputation for repeating, verbatim, whatever is said to him in a conversation by the person speaking to him (Paulie Gualtieri referred to Albert as a parakeet). He most likely has echolalia, a speech impediment causing meaningless repetition. Albert was also outspoken with DiMeo consigliere Silvio "Sil" Dante and soldier Pasquale "Patsy" Parisi "off the record," about his suspicion (which he was correct about, unbeknownst to him), that it was in fact Tony that killed Ralph Cifaretto over a horse, although in general Albert tended to agree with whoever spoke last. Albert was a good earner while Larry Barese was away, but saw a brief dip in productivity after one of his fronts Silvio once commented to Paulie that Albert was bringing in more money than him. Despite the one-sided dislike on Paulie's part, Albert was also present during Paulie's party following his release from prison for gun possession.

Trivia[]

  • Albert Barese's actor Richard Maldone was arrested in 2003 for drug trafficking as part of a gang affiliated with the Gambino Crime Family. Maldone was not convicted in court, but his legal troubles caused the character of Albert Barese to be written out of the show. Similar allegations of mob ties were later leveled against Tony Darrow, who portrayed Albert's cousin Larry Barese.
