Plot[]
The episode begins in front of Tails' personal desktop, with the browser closed up and the writing "STARTING SOON" written on the sliding door in blue. In the background, the muffled sounds of Sonic's voice can be heard. As Sonic tells about his encounter with Shadow onboard the Space Colony ARK and how he "wiped the floor with him", Sonic starts to snicker. However, Tails then points out that the show is starting, prompting Sonic to excuse himself and zoom off in a hurry, although not before wishing Tails good luck. Tails then appears in front of the camera and opens the doors on his browser, where he welcomes the viewers of the "Sonic Scoop", a show where is gets the viewers up to speed on the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, before introducing himself and his status as Sonic's best friend ever.
Bringing up new browsers on his desktop that showcase several rogues from the series, Tails explains that on today's episode, they will be talking about some of the dangers Sonic has encountered while saving the world. Of all the dangerous foes Tails showcases however, Tails notes that no one is more dangerous than Dr. Eggman, before settling on a shot of Eggman. Tails then elaborates that to that end; he has gotten an unusual guest to join them on today's show. Tails then tells the viewers to welcome Eggman's number one flunky: Orbot. With a click of a button his desktop, Orbot is brought up in a browser. Orbot himself greets the viewers and explains that he is as surprised to be on the show as the viewers are.
While playing some videos, Tails explains that he and Orbot have (sort of) gotten along in the past. Either way, Tails figured that Orbot would be the best source of information on Eggman. However, Tails then starts to wonder if they should call him by his real name: Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Orbot confirms that it is indeed Robotnik's real name, and that "Eggman" is a name that Sonic came up with to mock the doctor. Orbot then explains that Robotnik got so fed up with the nickname that he started calling himself "Eggman" just to "steal Sonic's thunder", and that he has stuck with it ever since. Tails considers it another victory for Sonic, but Orbot notes that he thinks it is rather empowering for Eggman to have come to own his nickname. Tails retorts that Orbot is just being biased, but Orbot points out Tails is as well, with Tails admitting that he got him there.
Continuing with the show, Tails elaborates upon how Eggman likes to kidnap all the small Animals he can find in order to use them as "living batteries" for his army of robots. Orbot concurs and explains that these robots are called "Badniks," and that they can look like other animals, plants, or more interpretive things (the last of which Orbot has trouble explaining). Tails then explains that to make matters worse, he uses his Badniks to try and conquer the world, which Tails asks for Eggman's reasons to do so. Orbot explains that while Eggman's end goal varies between his schemes, it always leads to the doctor himself being in control. Whether it is looming over them all or paving over cities to build tributes to himself, Eggman always wants to be at the center of attention. Tails proceeds to note that a guy with a 300 IQ should be able to tell that the world does not want him. As Tails then begins wonder where Eggman gets his kicks from however, his broadcast starts to scramble, with the audio falling out and Eggman's laugher looming in the background.
Soon after, an Eggman Empire-themed desktop appears on the screen, with Eggman boasting out of view that this will be enough of Tails. Eggman then orders the viewers not to close their browsers or attempt to adjust their VPN, before introducing himself while calling himself the "greatest scientific genius in the world." Eggman then explains that he will be handling the questions from now on. The first question then pops up on the screen, with Eggman reading it as "Don'tRegisterYourOwnNameCubot." With a defeated sigh, Eggman realizes the question is from Cubot. Noting that Cubot is now going behind his back like Orbot, Eggman notes that a person just cannot program good help these days. Regardless, an exasperated Eggman decides to get on with this anyway and reads the question, which says, "Who is that other hedgehog you work with sometimes? Is that Dark Sonic?" Eggman proceeds to explains that it is Shadow the Hedgehog the "so-called Ultimate lifeform," just as a pop-up of Shadow appears on the screen. Eggman elaborates that Shadow was created by his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, to which he snidely remarks that geniuses runs in his family, and that he freed Shadow from the military bunker controlled by G.U.N. Eggman then explains that G.U.N. stands for "Guardian Units of the Nations", and that he put them in their place during his last campaign with a sinister laugh. Returning to the matter regarding Shadow, Eggman explains that Shadow has become another thorn in his side, and though he is not one of Sonic's buddies, he is still a problem all the same.
Continuing with the next question, which comes from "SkyPatrol," Eggman reads the question, which says, "Did you really think you could hijack my stream?" Confused by what that question even means, Eggman starts to notice his audio getting scrambled and his screen flickering out. Now realizing what is happening, Eggman refuses to get cut off, as he is not done yet. However, his cries are ignored, as the screen returns to Tails' desktop, with Tails and Orbot back on the show. Tails proceeds to apologize for what happened, and remarks that Eggman has a way of ruining a good time. Either way, Tails hopes that they were able to impart a little knowledge on the viewers today. Orbot then tells the viewers that knowledge is power, and that Eggman is especially powerful since he is a genius. However, Tails remarks that Eggman is still not powerful enough for himself and others to be unable to handle him. Tails then tells the viewers that if they want to fight the Eggman Empire, they are welcome to like, comment and subscribe, before closing off the episode by asking the viewers to take care until next time. As the doors on Tails' browser then closes, Orbot says goodbye to the viewers, adding that they can have him back whenever they like and that they are free to ask him questions about himself next time.
Trivia[]
- This episode contains numerous references and Easter eggs:
- During the program, clips from several Sonic games appear, including Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces.
- Sonic saying, "So then I said "What you see is what you get" and then I wiped the floor with him!" is a reference to his final battle with Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2.
- The logo for "The Sonic Scoop" resembles the Sonic the Hedgehog ice cream popsicle.
- Tails saying that he and Orbot have gotten along in the past is a reference to Sonic and Tails forming an alliance with Dr. Eggman in Sonic Lost World.
- While Eggman is reading the message from Tails, the words "NO WAY!" can be read along the bottom of the screen. This is a reference to the quote "NO WAY! NO WAY! NO WAY! NO WAY?" that appears in the title screen of Blue Sphere.
- Cubot asking if Shadow is "Dark Sonic" is a reference to the form Sonic assumed in the Sonic X episode, "Teasing Time."
- Dr. Eggman saying that he put G.U.N. in their place during his last campaign is in reference to how he conquered the world in Sonic Forces.
- Tails' username, "SkyPatrol", is a reference to the game Tails' Skypatrol.
- The Japanese dub of this episode lacks the music of the English dub.
- The concept that Eggman's nickname is something he adopted after being called too many times that by Sonic was a theory suggested by Yuji Naka, born after the localization of Sonic Adventure. By the 2000s, however, Sonic Team started to drop some Western additions, which included "Ivo Robotnik" as a name, with the official Sonic Channel stating that Eggman's real name was "unknown". This however has recently changed over the years, with Tailstube being consider canon to the game by the game developers.
- Likewise, this is the first time since Sonic X that "Ivo Robotnik" has been acknowledged in Japanese media.
- When Orbot describes how there are Badniks based on animals, plants, or more interpretive things, a clip of the Egg Serpentleaf from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II is erroneously shown as an example of a Badnik based on a plant (despite the fact that the Egg Serpentleaf is not a Badnik but rather a mech piloted by Dr. Eggman).
