Calendar Comedy, known in Japan as Karendā ōgiri (カレンダー大喜利?), is a monthly series of wallpapers containing a what-if story involving an established character from the Sonic series, alongside another chosen by the community. Similar to the 2023 stories, there is a main character and a secondary character selected from a poll, with 2024's polls containing four options to 2023's two. It is also known as "Tell me, creators!", or "Oshiete! Kurieitāzu" (おしえて!クリエイターズ?). This is due to the fact that Eitaro Toyoda is not writing the stories himself in 2024, but instead is leaving it to the fans to create their own scenarios based on the images created by Tomoko Hayane, with the best ones being chosen to feature on the Sonic Channel website and their creators receiving prizes. Each month, five winning entries are chosen with each being given commentary by Toyoda and Sonic channel's "webmaster"; KIKUZO. Additional, "honourable mention", stories are also displayed and briefly discussed between the pair.

Sonic & Merlina[]

Summary[]

SonicChannelCalendar2024V2

During the introduction, Sonic Channel Webmaster KIKUZO introduces himself and reveals the results of the January 2024 poll, the winner of which was Merlina the Wizard. As KIKUZO explains, Merlina was an important character in Sonic and the Black Knight, though given how she had only appeared in that one game some would likely be surprised by her presence. A summarized version of the game's intro (and thus, Sonic and Merlina's first meeting) is presented, before revealing the illustration: Merlina is making "something", while a bewildered Sonic (who is holding a chili dog) and an exasperated Caliburn look on. The illustration is noted to have a fantasy atmosphere and an odd sense of tension.

The five winning entries for the story are as follows:

  • The first story prompt features Merlina proudly announcing that her magic had worked. Sonic is interested, and asks Merlina when it will be ready. The wizard replies that it will take a month. Sonic dryly notes that it would have been quicker to run and get a chili dog by himself. the commentary adds that, unlike Sonic's world, it is a laborious task to make a chili dog in the world of Camelot.
  • In the second story, Merlina proudly announces to Sonic her idea to set up a Ramen shop as a side job. She demonstrates to Sonic the fact she is making a soup by adding all of the ingredients as a start. She then asks Sonic if there was anything she was missing. Dejected, Sonic notes that Ramen soup is only good if there's chili dogs in it.
  • In the third story, the contributor jokingly makes note of how Sonic is mortified at the sight of the ingredients going into Merlina's stew before remembering the legends of King Arthur are set in the United Kingdom - which is stereotypically known for its bad food.
  • In the penultimate story, Merlina cheerfully announces to Sonic that she is making Sonic's favorite chili dog. Caliburn and Sonic are suspicious about the pot and ingredients, and realize that Merlina is making a "yucky party stew", much to their dismay.
  • The final story sets up a scenario. Merlina is making the best medicine in the world, but the final ingredient is Sonic's chili dog, the last one in the world. Sonic's look of despair adding to the scene as he's forced to choose between Merlina's medicine or his chili dog. The commentary by Toyoda and KIKUZO ponders if Toyoda would give up sushi or save the world, with Toyoda choosing sushi.

Amy & Professor Pickle[]

Summary[]

SC2024CalendarFeb

During the introduction, KIKUZO is shocked to learn that Professor Pickle was the one who had won the vote for the February 2024 illustration. He explains that Professor Pickle is an important character from Sonic Unleashed that gives Sonic and Chip a lot of advice, providing his character introduction from that game. In the game, Amy and Professor Pickle first meet after the former is rescued by Sonic. She begs him to tell her about Sonic's transformation, which he agrees to do over some sandwiches: as he too had been saved by Sonic, it was likely to be a common topic. KIKUZO notes how interesting it would be if they were still friends after the Dark Gaia incident and see each other often. With that, the illustration is revealed: Amy and Professor Pickle appear to be at a clothes store, with the former wearing an outfit described as "lovely", while the latter is dressed in punk attire. According to KIKUZO, Professor Pickle has been awakened to a new direction by "fashion master Amy".

The five winning entries for the story are as follows:

  • The first submission suggests the idea that Professor Pickle is dressing up to become a substitute performer in the Sonic Symphony World Tour. Toyoda and KIKUZO give commentary whereby they discuss if they do need a substitute, one should call on Professor Pickle who is fitting to be within the rock section of the Symphony; and that a duet between both he and Jun Senoue would be amusing. However, KIKUZO muses that Rock and Punk are two genres that clash and they wouldn't get very far.
  • The second story denotes Professor Pickle, Amy, and Vector the Crocodile within a new team known as "Team Punk". The user denotes that the three can solve issues with great flair. KIKUZO humorously notes if you stick an S in front of their name you get "Steam Punk". Toyoda muses over the team and notes they would work well solving crimes together - the professor uses his deduction skills while Amy uses her communication skills while Vector, according to KIKUZO, would misidentify the culprit. The duo discuss how "Team Punk" would make a funny and interesting trio that would be fun within the games.
  • In the third story, dialogue is given whereby Amy excitedly tells the professor that now they both have outfits, she too should match hair colors with the Professor. The professor muses over whether he should stop Amy's enthusiasm before it was too late. Toyoda considers the idea of Amy with the same bright punk color hair as Professor Pickle and decides that due to her crest or comb-like quills, it perhaps wouldn't look entirely unfitting on her.
  • The penultimate submission is a short interaction between Amy and the Professor. Amy brightly tries to convince the Professor there are more exciting things in the world than sandwiches, such as fashion. The Professor is none the wiser to Amy's slightly odd choices in fashion, and asks if the punk style he was dressed in was considered "fashionable" in the current day. He tells the hedgehog that he will wear the outfit to a sandwich party on the following day. Toyoda and KIKUZO discuss the idea of what a sandwich party could be with Toyoda suggesting it is a gentlemanly affair whereby they gather and eat sandwiches. The professor becomes furious over its lack of his beloved cucumber sandwiches and decides to go on a rampage in his punk attire.
  • The final story suggests that Professor Pickle is now "Pickle Rider No.1", a modified human made by Amy. Toyoda and KIKUZO are instantly enthralled by the possibilities behind the prompt, with KIKUZO suggesting that Amy is even more of a mad scientist than Dr. Eggman. Toyoda muses over the fact it would be cool to have a evil mad-scientist Amy and mentions how her coat does look somewhat like a lab coat. The closing thought from the pair is that the spikes on Professor Pickle's outfit may be intentional to draw parallels to Sonic.

Silver & Sonic Man[]

Summary[]

SCCalendarMarch24

Before revealing the results, KIKUZO notes that the poll for who would appear alongside Silver received 140,000 votes, thanking everybody for their participation. With that said, he also notes that the character who won the poll had raised quite a ruckus: Sonic Man. Since many would likely be asking who he is, KIKUZO explains that Sonic Man is a character that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where he raced against both Sonic and Silver. His profile and other details are unknown, making him something of a mystery, but the reason for his unique appearance is clear: he idolizes Sonic the Hedgehog. He even goes as far as to mimic Sonic's running style, keeping his hands behind his back and his hips low, though he's not as fast as Sonic. KIKUZO notes that the common theme between Sonic Man and Silver is "competition", but because of all that had happened in the game, they likely forgot having ever competed with each other. However, if they were to meet again somewhere, it was likely that they would compete again, which is the basis for the picture: Silver and Sonic Man are collecting eggs while dressed up in Easter outfits. KIKUZO notes that the egg that they are both reaching for in the picture has a familiar design.

The five winning entries for the story are as follows:

  • Firstly, it is prompted that egg collecting is the first errand on Silver and Sonic Man's agenda. Toyoda muses how the pair are in an endless cycle of fighting, breaking eggs and crying in the middle of the mission. The prompt reminds him of a show where kids run errands and is surprised to learn it still runs from time to time. Toyoda notes the unlike the wholesome kids in the show, Silver and Sonic Man are fighting over who is the "elder brother" or something similar; which leads into the the second story.
  • The second story is suggested to be from Cream's perspective, who, upon seeing Silver and Sonic Man dressed as rabbits, wishes she had an elder brother. Toyoda's interprets the situation as Silver and Sonic Man dressing up as rabbits to impress Cream and try and win her over, but humorously they don't live up to Cream. KIKUZO points out the fact Cream has two nice brothers in front of her but instead she wishes for only one and Toyoda suggests that she saw them collecting eggs and thought something to be amiss. KIKUZO muses that Cream's idea of a big brother is one thats hard to match.
  • The Third story prompt tells of how the Eggman-colored egg is the monthly salary that Silver and Sonic Man are trying to obtain. Toyoda is amused at the fact they are fighting over an egg for salary and that the pair should be angry about the fact they are fighting over an egg for payment. KIKUZO suggests that eggs are perhaps a popular form of payment in Soleanna and presents his own egg from Eggman's salary.
  • The fourth winner plays on the fact the Eggman egg is the same color as a half price sticker and notes how the egg is covered in those instead. Toyoda notes that half price isn't worth fighting over and that Silver and Sonic Man should share. KIKUZO ponders over the fact that half price stickers are now supposedly a sign of popularity.
  • The final story has Sonic Man proudly announcing that he has found a rare Chao egg. Silver appears worried and tries to get Sonic Man to stop as its results will affect the future. Toyoda is intrigued by the cliffhanger and wishes to know the rest of Silver's dialogue. KIKUZO muses that the because it is a chao egg it will hatch wonders over a chao with the ability to impact the future. Toyoda notes that due to the coloration of the egg, the chao may be an 'Egg Chao' and therefore the future must be full of chao with moustaches and glasses and shaped like eggs. KIKUZO points out how that would be the best future and ponders over the fact that this is how Silver is fixing the future. Toyoda amusedly notes he'd never want that kind of chao and how it would be the worst outcome for the future.

Trivia[]

  • The poll for who was set to appear with Silver was contested between Shadow, Vector, Mephiles and Sonic Man.[3]
    • This poll has the highest amount to votes to date with over 145,000 votes.
  • The artwork features Silver and Sonic Man in poses very similar to Silver and Sonic's on the boxart for Sonic Rivals. This could be considered peculiar if it was the intended reference as the Rivals series never released in Japan.
  • This is the first official Sonic media that Sonic Man has appeared in since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Shadow & Rouge[]

Summary[]

SCCalendarApril2024

Noting the recent announcement of Sonic X Shadow Generations, KIKUZO describes Shadow the Hedgehog and his relationship with Sonic before going into the winner of the poll: Rouge the Bat, a treasure hunter who specializes in gems. First appearing in Sonic Adventure 2, Rouge is a mysterious spy who moves between Sonic, Eggman, and the federal government while finding out the truth, being a professional in both information gathering and kicking techniques. Subsequent games have seen her working with Shadow as a member of Team Dark alongside E-123 Omega. KIKUZO sums up Shadow and Rouge's relationship as being “good business partners”: they have a long history together, often working on missions together, yet they do not interfere with each other much nor do they go beyond a certain level. Despite this, they have a strong mutual trust that makes them more than just colleagues, often helping each other out in a pinch. This is shown in the companion picture: Shadow is relaxing at the pool with a drink in hand, as Rouge appears to be trying to escape from a series of explosions. KIKUZO wonders if the two are in opposite circumstances as they speak through their communicators.

The five winning entries for the story are as follows:

  • Shadow question Rouge on whether or not she forgot to close the gap tap. Toyoda is amused over Shadow "feigning ignorance" and denotes that gas is a dangerous ordeal and needs to be used with precaution. KIKUZO ponders what Toyoda means due to his "all-electric" state, prompting Toyoda to think about the fact that several houses don't have gas taps in the modern timeline before turning to wonder over what Rouge was doing to cause the explosion in the first place, of which KIKUZO offers that it could be something "wicked".
  • The second story idea suggests the explosion was caused by Shadow by mistaking an explosion switch for his communicator while both he and Rouge were unaware of it. Toyoda amusedly notes that because Shadow doesn't have a communicator, Rouge's pleas to him aren't getting through while KIKUZO notes that Shadow keeps pressing the button over and over causing more explosions in the process. Toyoda expresses his delight with the story suggestion, comparing it to that of a comedy sketch.
  • The third story has Rouge desperately asking Shadow for communication before realizing she is holding a Konjac (gel). Both Toyoda and KIKUZO are amused over the punchline but it leads Toyoda to ponder how she didn't notice before that it wasn't a communicator due to its texture and reasons it must be due to the fact that the characters of the series wear gloves, of which KIKUZO agrees to being a valid reason why, as gloves would impact the textural sensations but then exclaims confusion over how Rouge didn't feel the wobbling.
  • The fourth story suggests that Rouge is in the basement below the swimming pool and is in charge of heating it up, she radios in with Shadow, asking why she's heating the pool when Shadow isn't even swimming. Toyoda seems to admire the lengths the bat is going to, but wonders when she became so devoted towards Shadow's needs while KIKUZO adds she may be doing it because she wasn't happy that he wasn't swimming with so many others around - as the grim hedgehog stands out. KIKUZO then suggests she may be ecologically heating up the pool using rubbish, causing the pair to question what brought her to this point and if her reward were to be a gemstone.
  • The final story submission chosen depicts Rouge as preparing an extra large popcorn when Shadow, who seeks further enjoyment from his movie, asks Rouge for even more popcorn. KIKUZO compares Rouge taking care of Shadow to that of his "Serving girl", of which Toyoda muses she might go on to act like a mother, stating "Shadow boy, do you want to eat oversized popcorn again? Oh, what am I gonna do with you?”, or something similar. KIKUZO notes Shadow to be a "Bigwig" for using his communicator to make the request.

Fang & Trip[]

Summary[]

SCCalendarMay2024

KIKUZO gives a brief rundown of Fang the Hunter, a rogue jerboa employed by Eggman in Sonic Superstars, before introducing the winning character: Trip the Sungazer, an enigmatic girl wearing heavy armor who resides on the Northstar Islands and served as a guide for Fang and Eggman. She primarily helped out Fang, but was prone to making mistakes due to her clumsiness and carelessness. As KIKUZO ponders what Fang thinks of Trip's obedience in spite of his constant anger towards her, the month's illustration is revealed: Fang has been astonished by an unexpected discovery, prompting Trip to remove her helmet in order to see it. KIKUZO notes how despite looking at the same thing, they both have different reactions.

The winning five entries for the story are as follows:

  • The first entry suggests that Fang is watching his beloved Marvelous Queen being towed away. KIKUZO muses over the vehicles one-of-a-kind design and notes Fang's astonishment to be understandable at it being towed away. Toyoda notes how there is a parking ban in the jungle, while KIKUZO ponders if Dr. Eggman's robots are patrolling and considers that, if it were the case, that Fang would get off easy due to being one of Eggman's henchmen.
  • The second winning story has Trip pull on the ivy as the Marvelous Queen blows up. Toyoda, amusedly, recounts how the artwork does look like Trip is pulling a switch while KIKUZO denotes Trip to be a "Go-getter" with an cute face but is awful at pulling pranks. Toyoda interjects that Eggman was the one who told her to pull it to see something fun but in the end it is Trip who wound up being scolded for the act.
  • Thirdly, it is suggested that the pair are watching Amy performing boxing moves. Toyoda ponders why Fang is astonished by the sight, while KIKUZO suggests that Amy is coming straight for Fang with a "Dempsey Roll". Toyoda warns the Hunter that, instead of holding up binoculars, he should be running before he gets hit by Amy's punch.
  • The fourth entry places Trip and Fang in the situation of becoming astonished of some shop-ware they are watching becoming two-for-one and at a discounted price. Toyoda notes his enjoyment of the show-type affair going on and how it looks like Trip is giving Fang acting lessons. KIKUZO wonders what Fang is looking to buy and questions if it is another hat like the one he always wears. Toyoda suggests him to be buying more cork bullets and that the show they are watching is aired in Studiopolis Zone. KIKUZO interposes with the exclamation of free shipping being offered and muses how it must be hard to set up a show in the middle of the jungle.
  • The final winning story has Trip and Fang scouting out where Sonic X Shadow Generations is being created. Toyoda ponders if Fang saw what he thought he did while KIKUZO exclaims over the pair seeing the "shocking scene" of Sonic and Shadow joining together to save the world. Toyoda adds that the addition of Silver would make it a triple fusion. Toyoda hopes that readers look forward to the game's release while KIKUZO adds Fang would be looking forward to Shadow's exploits.

Sonic & Tails[]

Summary[]

SCCalendarJune2024

The winning five entries for the story are as follows:

  • The first story suggests Sonic to be looking for a phone using a tracker while Tails chides the speedster for not using a shoulder strap to keep it safe. Toyoda is intrigued by the large-scale search for the phone but turns to KIKUZO and questions what the matter is. KIKUZO tells Toyoda that he has lost his phone, while Toyoda proudly states he has never lost his while showing off his own home-made shoulder strap to keep it safe and, in the process, perplexing KIKUZO.
  • The second places Knuckles into the situation who is gliding alongside the pair before being surrounded by a flock of seabirds. Toyoda appears concerned for knuckles and questions if Sonic is pointing his finger to where he needs to be to come in and help. KIKUZO meanwhile ponders if Sonic is pointing at something irrelevant, such as a chili dog, which leads to Knuckles becoming annoyed over being ignored.
  • The third story refers to the idea that Sonic is looking at his finger to reduce motion sickness. Toyoda ponders if Tails is looking at Sonic's finger too and whether the theory actually works. KIKUZO suggests they should try it and pulls out paper with an optical illusion on it. The two come to the realisation that instead of making them better, the illusion instead makes them nauseous. KIKUZO is disappointed his illusion did not hypnotize Toyoda into buying him a bottle of "oil" in the middle of the night.
  • In the fourth story, Sonic urges Tails to hurry up as they are being pursued by Amy. The Fox quickly realizes that Sonic may have stood her up on another date. Toyoda is interested to know how Amy is following the pair in the air and what technology she is using to chase Sonic. KIKUZO suggests Amy is using her card float ability from Sonic Frontiers, using her tarot cards at high speed to float. Toyoda ponders if one can see her face while the cards are going around like the "High-Level D*nast Lightning Bullet". KIKUZO notes that if one were to find out, they would be met by a "maiden straight".
  • The final story places Sonic as urging Tails to hurry onwards else they shall be late for their chili doc[sic] examination. Tails ponders what a chili doc is. KIKUZO becomes curious over what a chili dog examination is and what it involves. Toyda tells of how a chili dog examination consists of a delicious test for chili dog lovers made by chili dog lovers and consists of a workbook for the best strategies and results. Toyoda enthusiastically states that he is going to make the first class this year. KIKUZO looks over the workbook which contains the following:
    • Delicious World Meals Series
    • Chili Dog First-Class Certification
    • Trends and Strategies
    • Past Question Collection
    • Answers
The story ends with KIKUZO praising Toyoda's progress.

  • The first four months of 2024 contained the four hedgehog main characters in the series: Sonic, Amy, Shadow and Silver.
    • This is the first time since Sonic Channel started monthly artwork for the characters that these four characters have appeared in a row.
  • Each of the characters featured in the polls have had some sort of connection to the character who is the primary focus of that picture:
    • For Sonic, Tails is his best friend and sidekick, Jet is his primary rival in the Sonic Riders series, Merlina is his primary ally in Sonic and the Black Knight, Moto Bug is the most common Badnik in the series, Dr. Eggman is his archnemesis in the series, and Knuckles is his first rival and one of his closest friends.
    • For Amy, both Big and Cream are fellow members of Team Rose (with the latter often being paired up with Amy similar to how Tails is paired with Sonic), the Koco were heavily interacted with by Amy during Sonic Frontiers, and Professor Pickle was aided by Amy in his research into the Gaia Manuscripts.
    • For Silver, Shadow was the one who taught him about Chaos Control and exposed Mephiles' deception, Vector recruited him into Team Vector during Team Sonic Racing, Mephiles manipulated Silver into trying to kill Sonic in the past, and Sonic Man raced against Silver during the Town Mission "Sonic Man Returns!".
    • For Shadow, Omega, Rouge, and E-10000B are all fellow members of Team Dark (with Rouge having known Shadow since even before then), the Chao have been shown interacting with Shadow in various pieces of official art, he has an strong rivalry with Sonic that has end up clashing with him several times, Maria is the one who he was the most close too, Gerald is his creator and the one who taught him how to use his powers, and Black Doom is the being where the DNA that was use to make him came from, and later tried to use him for his plan, before trying later to destroy him.
