Overview[]

Isla is a Rushdown Character who specializes in mix-ups and air mobility, allowing her to keep the opponent on their toes with her massive variety of options in the air.

She's well-rounded enough that she can play a neutral-oriented poking game thanks in part to her far Neo Geo C Button, which has MASSIVE range (and is also special cancelable), and Fill-In, a unique projectile that lingers a little longer on the floor than most projectiles, allowing Isla to both catch any approaching opponent off-guard and control a decent portion of the screen.

Alternatively, she can also use her jumps to go on the offense and vary her approach. Drips can be used to either bait the opponent into pre-emptively throwing out an anti-air (which Isla can capitalize on with the aforementioned standing Neo Geo C Button) or to give Isla an opportunity to cross up with her jumping Neo Geo D Button, which functions just like Iori's "taco" (aka, Ge-Shiki: Yuriori, Back Input + Neo Geo B Button while airborne), being a dedicated cross-up that's much easier to use after Drips Forward in particular.

Isla also boasts a meterless Invincible anti-air herself in Scribe, which, while a tad slower, can be used to punish a poorly timed jump-in on the opponent's part. For a safer option, her crouching Neo Geo C Button also has an active enough hitbox that can be used against hops or jumps in addition to its impressive range.

One of Isla's biggest downsides, however, is her lack of reversal options. Scribe is useful enough as an anti-air, but it's slower than desired for a reversal, making it prone to being punished on block if the opponent is patient enough. Speaking of which, Isla herself is very prone to being anti-aired if the opponent catches on to her jumping habits with Drips. Her meterless damage is also lower than average, especially when compared to other characters like Terry, Ralf, or Rock, all of whom can easily break over 200 damage off a single light confirm.

Overall, Isla is a relatively beginner-friendly character whose combos are forgiving and her gameplan is relatively simple, whether on the ground or airborne.

Trivia[]

  • All of Isla's move names are actual terms related to tagging and graffiti.
    • "All City" describes being known for one's graffiti throughout a city, which originally meant being known throughout the five boroughs of New York City by way of subway cars.
    • "Fill-Ins" (also known as "Bombs", "Throw ups", or "Throwies") are pieces of graffiti that's either filled in a rush, or a solid fill.
    • The "Piece" in "King of Piece" is short for one's "masterpiece", used to describe a work that is very complex, time-consuming, and is usually painted by experienced writers.
      • The "I&A" part of "King of Piece:I&A" refers to Isla and Amanda.
    • "Wild Style" (or "wildstyle") is a style of graffiti with text so stylized it can be difficult to read, often an interlocking, three-dimensional type.
    • "Back to Back" describes graffiti that is painted all the way across a wall, from end to end.
  • Compared to most air specials in KOF XV, it's possible to do a "Tiger Knee" motion (QCFUF Input or QCBUB Input) rather easily for Isla's Piecing A & B specials, allowing her to use them instantly while still on the ground. Additionally, she can also do it from a backdash. The same is also true for her Piecing C special, though the Tiger Knee input method is trickier than the backdash method.
  • Originally, during the 2021 Tokyo Game Show and December 2021 Open Beta Test where she was playable, Isla's To Front was mapped to QCF Input + Neo Geo B Button/Neo Geo D Button, while Wild Style was 2QCF Input + Neo Geo A Button/Neo Geo C Button. They were changed to the inputs shown above for unknown reasons come the final release in February 2022.
