Benco

Benco Instant Choco Drink appeared in Smurfs publications.

Benco Instant Choco Drink is manufactured in the Netherlands. It is a very popular drink mix in Europe. The chocolate flavored crystals can be mixed with milk or sprinkled over ice cream.

A series of ads for Benco were published in comics in Europe with an anthropomorphic bottle of Benco living with the Smurfs and using his chocolate drink in order to help with their issues: like getting Brainy Smurf to stop lecturing the other Smurfs; awakening Lazy Smurf from a deep sleep; or rewarding hard work.

A 13-page adventure published over several weeks had Benco and the Smurfs having to face one of Gargamel's evil plots. (When published in book form, this story had Benco replaced with Clockwork Smurf.)

Besides the Smurfs, Benco also appeared in a series of stories in 1978 in which he had adventures with another Peyo character, Benny Breakiron.

These stories were published in Spirou (the Smurfs' comic of origin) and rival publications like Le Journal de Mickey (a weekly comic featuring Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck). A television advertisement featuring Benco and the Smurfs was also shown in the late-1970s in Belgium.
