"An Unsmurfy Friendship" is the forty-ninth episode of Season 2 of the CGI TV series, The Smurfs.

Synopsis

After being sidelined from the smurfball tournament, Grouchy heads to the forest and befriends Bigmouth.

Summary

The Smurfs prepare to play a heated game of smurfball, with Hefty and Storm as team captains and Brainy as the referee. Hefty chooses Smurfette, Blossom, and Farmer while Storm chooses Lily, Begonia, and Handy. Only Clumsy appears to be left, much to Hefty's fear, but luckily, Hefty chooses Grouchy while Storm chooses a happy Clumsy.

The Smurfs start the game with a frustrated Blossom pushing Grouchy around the field. Grouchy turns out to be a large pain, refusing to tackle Storm when Hefty tells her to and standing there. This makes it easy for Storm, who wins a point for her team. Hefty, Smurfette, and Blossom are left annoyed at Grouchy and order him to sit on the bench. Unfortunately for Grouchy, he turns out to be upset as the Smurfs exclude him. Grouchy turns out to be a pain even when he sits on the bench, as when the ball hits him, it flies to his former team's goal. This makes Hefty send him away. Grouchy angrily leaves, saying he doesn't like being excluded. Grouchy walks in the forest, feeling left out from activities.

Elsewhere, Bigmouth asks his brother Egghead if he wants to play with him. Egghead, who lies down in the front of Bigmouth's house, refuses and doesn't have any interest right now. Bigmouth is upset and mad at him for this and goes to play with someone else. Bigmouth comes across Leaf, who is playing with the forest animals. Unfortunately, due to his chaotic appearance, the animals cower and run. Leaf is annoyed at Bigmouth and tells him to leave her alone as she transforms into a bird and flies away. Bigmouth is hurt, seeing that nobody wants to play with him.

Grouchy, meanwhile, is upset for the same reason. However, he comes across Bigmouth and initially runs away until Bigmouth cries about not having anyone to play with. Grouchy finds a kindred spirit in Bigmouth when the latter asks him to be his friend. Just then, Grouchy gets shocked by a spider that Bigmouth threatens and makes it run away. Grouchy decides to befriend Bigmouth over this, both saying they doesn't like spiders.

Grouchy and Bigmouth walk in the forest, discussing things they don't like. They later begin playing games, with Grouchy even laughing at their new friendship. Just then, they come across Egghead, who is mad at Bigmouth for befriending a Smurf. Bigmouth detests, saying he can friend anyone he likes. Grouchy is touched by Bigmouth defending him. Egghead decides to play with Bigmouth, only to get shot down since he rejected Bigmouth earlier. This leaves Egghead upset and he runs off. Grouchy cracks a joke with Bigmouth, making the two of them laugh.

Grouchy and Bigmouth later see the Smurfs that rejected him from smurfball. Grouchy asks Bigmouth to play with him as long as he doesn't eat anyone. Bigmouth promises and they go into the field. The Smurfs continue to play smurfball, Storm's team wins, Storm makes fun of Smurfette, but the Smurfs stop the game and most of them end up screaming. Grouchy says Bigmouth is now his friend, but Handy claims he's insane. However, Brainy says Bigmouth saying he is a vegetarian ogre means ogres are allowed to participate in smurfball games. This makes Hefty and Storm lose most of their teammates, with the only ones left being Farmer and Smurfette. They decide to take on Bigmouth.

The Smurfs start the game, but obviously, they have a disadvantage - Bigmouth, who is able to kick a boulder-sized ball that knocks Farmer away. This shocks the other Smurfs and are slightly more scared of Grouchy now. The Smurfs start several games over, all of which ends in them getting attacked by Bigmouth out of pure fright. Grouchy and Bigmouth end up winning 200 games because of this. Later, Hefty, Smurfette, Farmer, and Storm have a private conversation. They tell Grouchy and Bigmouth that they've been kicked out. Grouchy walks away, angry and upset. Just then, as Bigmouth says they can still play together, the other Smurfs that left before run away from Egghead, who captures the Smurfs in a sack.

Grouchy tries to fight Egghead himself, only to be blocked by Bigmouth, who puts him in his hand. Grouchy orders for Bigmouth to put him down. Bigmouth is upset since Grouchy will leave him but is also confused why he wants to save them. Grouchy informs him that the Smurfs are his friends too. Bigmouth lets Grouchy go, much to his depression. Grouchy faces off against Egghead but is almost eaten until Bigmouth comes to the rescue. Bigmouth makes Egghead drop the Smurf sack and Grouchy, successfully freeing the other Smurfs. The Smurfs cheer for Grouchy but see Bigmouth and Egghead still fighting. He calls for the other Smurfs to throw nuts at him and Hefty finishes Egghead off by hitting Egghead with a log. Egghead screams in pain, letting Bigmouth realize how much pain he is in. Egghead decides to apologize to Bigmouth and they decide to play again.

Grouchy is happy for the ogres but says he doesn't have any friends left. Smurfette comforts him, saying she and the other Smurfs are his friends. Both Hefty and Storm want Grouchy on their team, with Grouchy saying he still doesn't like smurfball. The other Smurfs laugh, and so does Grouchy.

Trivia

• Farmer's hat and shoes fall off of him when he gets hit by Bigmouth with the ball.
  • This is the third episode in which a Smurf is seen bald, and the second time Farmer is seen bald, with his first time being "The Snail Whisperer", while the first example is Dreamer in "Knight Smurfalot".
• This is the first episode in which Leaf interacts with Bigmouth and the first in which she does not interact with any of the Smurfs.
• Some of the movements of Bigmouth and Egghead fighting are the same as Vanity and Tailor's fighting in "The Makeover".
• In this episode, Bigmouth is friendly with the Smurfs. This is similar to the 1981 TV series, where Bigmouth was mostly friends towards them.
• This is the eighth episode in the series in which the background Smurfs do not appear. The other episodes are "Pop Out!", "Mirror, Mirror On The Armoire", "Smurfy Mother's Day!", "A Thief Among Us!", "Mommy's Masterpiece", "Back To Nature", and "Wild Gets Tamed".
  • This is also the fifth episode not to feature the Smurf Village. The other episodes are "Mirror, Mirror On The Armoire", "Smurfy Mother's Day!", "Mommy's Masterpiece", and "Wild Gets Tamed".
• In US production order, this is the final episode of season 2. In US airing order, this is the second to last segment of season 2.

Goofs

• Egghead at first only captures the Smurfs that had previously left the game, with the only ones out of the sack being Smurfette, Hefty, Farmer, and Storm. However, in the next shot, Storm and Hefty can be seen in the sack, despite not being captured by Egghead on screen.
  • In addition, Farmer and Smurfette are not shown being captured on screen before the shot but appear being freed by Grouchy.
