Diagram of a security honeypot

A honeypot is a security method to catch a hacker in the act of using a service that is not allowed. A honeypot will typically be a website designed to look normal with information that is valuable to hackers.[1] However, it is monitored and is usually able to track visitors.

A honeypot is used to distract or find hackers to prevent real attacks from taking place. A honeypot can also serve as a warning for potential attacks.
