Summary[]
When Taisei and his friends arrive at Kokura Station in Kyushu, they are greeted by Tsukumo Umikaze, the driver of Shinkalion N700S Kamome. Taisei and his friends immediately begin simulation training. However, during the training, Tsukumo's Vehicle Combination fails.
The cause is not Tsukumo, but the new operators Katsuki and Adachi. Ochiai from the Ōmiya Command Office is appointed to be in charge of training these two….
Plot[]
The Omiya trio travels through the Shin-Kanmon Tunnel to get to Kyushu, exciting Taisei. Mai and Ochiai are accompanying them. At Kokura Station, they meet Tsukumo Umikaze, driver of the N700S Kamome.
When they arrive at the Kyushu Railway Museum, Taisei is thrilled to see the new N700S, which is exclusively used on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Line. Vina finds it weird that he gets excited looking at a Shinkalion that's only in train form. But Tsukumo welcomes his enthusiasm, saying that the Kamome will be protecting Kyushu.
Ryota suggests that they have a mock battle so he can teach him things as an upperclassman. But Tsukumo replies that he became a driver at the same time as them, and they're also in the same grade. Though he's yet to see actual combat, he already feels prepared. Meanwhile, Hikino Nakatani, Kyushu's commander, comes to greet Ochiai.
The drivers did have a planned simulation battle anyway. Akane notices that Ryota looks tired, to which he admits he got up to early but isn't concerned because Mai will wake him up. Mai hits him then.
Nakatani asks if Ochiai considered any alternate means of transportation. She says that if they'd taken an overnight highway bus instead of a train, the drivers would have had more time to sleep. Ochiai is surprised by the idea of taking a bus from Tokyo, but Nakatani suggests the Hakata Express, and enthusiastically explains about it.
To begin the training, the Shinkalions are deployed in the Metaverse by two staff members of Nakatani, Katsuki and Adachi. Next, they launch the simulation of the ERDA Transport Plane to allow for a combination. They drop the ERDA Ferry. Tsukumo begins the process to combine with it. However, the combination fails midway, something which has been an ongoing issue. Nakatani says that this isn't an issue with the driver, because Tsukumo's Aptitude Value is high and he has good results on the battle simulator. She blames Katsuki and Adachi for the delayed timing of their instructions and rough dispatchment work. The two object to this, and point out that the ferry is bigger compared to other vehicles. But Nakatani argues that they need to keep the vehicle descent speed within the safe zone. Katsuki and Adachi start to argue with each other about who's to blame, until Ochiai steps in, asking that they listen to her. She states that while it does look difficult to dispatch something as large as the ERDA Ferry, not giving proper instructions will end up causing the driver to suffer. Even though they work behind the scenes, ensuring safety falls on the command staff. Nakatani is pleased with what Ochiai is doing and explains that she was called here in order to help the new recruits at Kyushu. Ochiai argues that she's not that special, as she's always relying on others at Omiya. But Katsuki and Adachi are already moved and ask for her further guidance. She remembers Takanawa telling her that she's not assertive enough and has to try and break out of her shell to make the most of her abilities. Ochiai decides to take this to heart.
As the drivers are done with their training, Taisei suggests a new activity for them to do. He pulls out a travel guide, explaining that the Railway Club in Omiya will be presenting a research paper at the second semester school festival. Mai adds that Takanawa suggested they work on it while in Kyushu, to not burden the drivers while they're busy with their duties. Ryota mentions that Ganma is back in Omiya on standby for the time being. Tsukumo is impressed by how many drivers they have, and Vina jumps in to say that it's not just drivers. She introduces herself as Taisei's guardian.
Changing the subject back to the research project, Taisei explains that it's going to be on Kyushu's transportation system. The research will involve taking the Sanyo Shinkansen from Kokura, then the Kyushu Shinkansen at Hakata, then transferring to the Relay Kamome at Shin-Tosu, and then the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen Kamome from Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki. Then they'll go from Nagasaki to Sasebo, and the final destination will be Tabira-Hiradoguchi, which is the westernmost station in Japan. Ryota and Akane both seem a bit overwhelmed by the complexity of the schedule. Ryota actually wondered if Ina came up with it. Taisei explains that she didn't, and Ina decided not to come to Kyushu because there was something she wanted to research. But Vina mentions that Taisei's railway friend offered to help out. Taisei explains to the others about Delta. Delta had previously been to Kyushu and told him the train transfer route. He also recommended Tabira-Hiradoguchi Station, where there's a railway museum. Akane asks if they can even make it in time. Taisei answers that they can't but it would probably work if they took the first train the next day. Ryota is already unhappy about having the make the first train two days in a row, but Tsukumo is interested and asks if he can come. He mentions that he was planning on going to Nagasaki anyway, to send his younger brother and sister, Kai and Suzu, who were coming to visit, back to home.
Taisei decides that they'll spend the day checking out Kitakyushu, and Tsukumo offers to show him around. Tsukumo shows everyone his favorite sights, and they also visit Japan's first railway overpass, which has since been demolished. Tsukumo takes a photo while they're there, and ends up showing Taisei some of his other photos. Stopping on one from Nagasaki, Tsukumo explains that he's always loved looking at old cranes and ruins of naval facilities. His hobby is going there and taking photos. Taisei says that he used to go to old railway facilities with his sister on the Shinkansen. This leads Tsukumo to realize this will be the first time his brother and sister ride the Shinkansen. He was worried about them not being able to find their way. He then gets a call from them. Currently, they're at Nagasaki Station. Kai reads the directions to assure Tsukumo they're going the right way. Then Tsukumo says he'll be waiting for them at the station.
As Ochiai attempts to explain everything to Katsuki and Adachi, they're alerted of an attack. An Unknown has appeared near Shin-Omura on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen. As the drivers rush back, Tsukumo worries about Kai and Suzu.
The Capture Wall is launched, but fails to actually catch the enemies. Ochiai struggles to explain how to do it properly. Eventually, she ends up just launching it herself while explaining, the situation becoming more urgent.
Tsukumo in the Kamome is the first to launch, the Omiya drivers following right after. Because there are four Unknowns, and they're small, they each decide to split up and take one enemy. The bus-like Unknowns are extremely fast, though.
Nakatani explains that before the Kyushu Shinkansen opened, buses were the dominant transportation there. They were at first more convenient for traveling between Kokura and Hakata, though this has started reversing as the Shinkansen lines expanded. She thinks the Unknowns might have arrived because of the Shinkansen outspeeding buses.
To beat them, Tsukumo requests to do his vehicle combination. Katsuki and Adachi are unsure that they can, but Ochiai has already left with the Transport Plane. She drops the ferry directly, and Tsukumo combines with it. Then, Ochiai deploys the remaining support vehicles.
Tsukumo uses the hover features of his combination to make an attack. Still, the enemy retaliates. With support from Akane, he's able to block. Tsukumo tells the remaining enemies that his brother and sister are on their Shinkansen trip, and that buses should stop interfering with the Shinkansen, which carries the hopes and dreams of so many people. He defeats them with a Trimaran Cutlass attack.
Ochiai later apologizes for taking command without permission. Still, Katsuki and Adachi tell her that she was really cool, and are interested in learning more from her.
As the drivers watch a Shinkansen go by, Taisei realizes that if they're standing around there, Kai and Suzu will get to Kokura first. Tsukumo is freaked out by this, but they head there, only for Taisei's realization to be correct. They're both unhappy that Tsukumo wasn't waiting for them at the station, though he tries to apologize.
