Decap Attack is a platformer title developed by Vic Tokai and released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991 in the west.

Plot[]

Max D. Cap, a demon from the underworld has returned to conquer the overworld with his army of monsters, shattering the skeleton shaped island the world's residents live on into pieces.

The mad but benevolent scientist Dr. Frank N. Stein and his assistant Igor send their bizarre creation, a headless mummy with a face grafted on to his torso, Chuck D. Head to make the land whole once more and defeat Max D. Cap saving the surface world from demonic enslavement.

Gameplay[]

Decap Attack is very much a spiritual successor to the Master System's Psycho Fox.

Much like in Psycho Fox, Chuck can equip a helper that can be thrown to take out enemies before returning to him, although being hit by an opponent will cause the skull to disappear. The Skull power up will sit atop Chuck's shoulders as he travels, as if it was his actual face.

Chuck can also attack by shooting out the monsterous face embedded in his body which will attack enemies directly in front of him. Jumping on enemies will also defeat them if Chuck continues to stomp them into the ground.

Chuck is also capable of flutter jumping which allows him to slowly descend.

After beating a boss battle the player is treated to a bonus game which will allow Chuck to obtain power ups and extra lives. Some of the skeleton island will also reform as a result of Chuck defeating the boss, allowing Chuck to progress to the next land. There are seven sets of levels, one example is Tibuland.

Trivia[]

  • This title was originally released in Japan as a licensed game, based off the Magical Hat anime series, titled Magical Hat's Turbo Flight! Adventure (まじかるハットのぶっとびターボ!大冒険 Majikaru Hatto no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken?). However due to the game’s developer, Vic Tokai, failing to obtain the Magical Hat license outside of Japan, it was completely redone for the Western release.
  • This is one of four games that use similar gameplay elements all released by Vic Tokai; Kid Kool, Psycho Fox, Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure and Decap Attack. All four titles involve throwable allies that act as an extra hit point and return to the protagonist like a boomerang, the requirement to stomp enemies into the ground to fully defeat them, and several environmental items such as long flexible poles that can be held onto to launch yourself forwards.
  • Decap Attack had a long running comic series in the UK's Sonic the Comic magazine.
  • Decap Attack is included in the Sega Mega Drive Classics.
