Ravenscroft, also known as the Composer, was a man of unknown species who is now presumed to be a ghost.
Description[]
Little is known about mad musical genius Ravenscroft, save that he composed the haunting tune of Grim Grinning Ghosts, later to become the anthem of the Haunted Mansion.[1] He also wrote one of the books which could be found in the study of Mr Coats and Mr Davis when they drafted plans for the Mansion, at least according to a story once told by the Ghost Host.[2]In 2011, his imposing tomb (adorned with carvings of the various instruments that have been used to play the ghostly song over the centuries, with Victor Geist's organ given centerstage) was brought to the Mansion's graveyard alongside other graves of happy haunts. Tis said that brushing one's finger against the carvings of instruments allows you to hear echoes of the music��[1]
Behind the scenes[]
After the name appeared on the spine of a book in one panel of the 2006 story Blueprint for Murder, Ravenscroft's Tomb was one of the additions during the 2011 creation of a "scenic queue" to the Walt Disney World Haunted Mansion.
The real-life composer of Grim Grinning Ghosts was Buddy Baker; Ravenscroft is instead named for Thurl Ravenscroft, who portrayed Uncle Theodore in the ride and (as a result) is a lead singer in the in-ride performance of the song.
It is unknown if Ravenscroft was any relation of another Haunted Mansion character named after Thurl Ravenscroft, the vampire Lord Ravenscroft.
