Arthur Ashford, 4th Earl Ashford was a British aristocrat born to the Ashford family.[1]
Biography[]
Arthur Ashford was the twin brother of Thomas Ashford, themselves the sons of Stanley Ashford, 2nd Earl Ashford. Following Thomas' death without an heir, Arthur inherited his title. During the 1930s the family was presented with a pair of golden lugers which became a treasured heirloom. These lugers are suspected of being gifts from Hermann Göring, presented in the immediately lead-up to the Second World War as part of a diplomatic campaign to promote Anglo-German unity. The gifts remained in the family's possession for the remainder of the century in spite of their politically damaging nature.[2] The Ashford peerage was subsequently succeeded by Arthur's son, Dr. Edward Ashford, who became the 5th Earl Ashford.
