“ Superman… „
~ The Iron Giant's most famous quote and his last words.
“ I am not a gun. „
~ The Iron Giant after saving the two kids from falling.
“ Hogarth. „
~ The Iron Giant to Hogarth after regaining his senses.

The Iron Giant is the titular deuteragonist of the 1999 animated film of the same name and a cameo character in the 2018 film Ready Player One and the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

He is a genial 50-foot-tall autonomous robot from another world that crash lands on Earth before becoming friends with a young boy named Hogarth who rescues him from his own internal defensive mechanism.

He is voiced by Vin Diesel in the first film who also voiced Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and currently Jonathan Lipow in the rest of Warner Bros. Series.

What Makes Him Pure Good?[]

  • After Hogarth saves him, he follows Hogarth, befriending him and showing him the power switch as his way of expressing gratitude.
  • He helps Dean in the junkyard by making several large art sculptures for him.
  • He is saddened by the death of the deer when it is killed by hunters, placing a value on the lives of all creatures.
  • He feels remorse for almost killing Hogarth, running away in shame.
  • Despite him knowing he'll be exposed; he saves two boys from falling off a roof.
  • When he is attacked by the military, he chooses to first run instead of fight back.
  • Though he did cause some accidents, such as the power plant being taken off-line and the railroad accident which derailed a train, it wasn't done out of any malicious intent, but simply because he needed to eat metal to sustain himself or by sheer accident or being careless. He even attempts to fix the damage to the railroad he'd done when Hogarth tells him to stop.
  • While he does lose control of himself and begins attacking the military forces after believing Hogarth died, this is due to the previous programming installed into him. Furthermore, after he sees Hogarth is alive and is reminded of his previous vow that he wasn't a gun, he returns to normal self and stops attacking the military forces.
  • Although the bump on his head caused his system to rewire and lose some of his original aggressive program, this does not count as a moral agency issue as even after fixing his bump and temporarily going berserk, he still chooses to be good afterwards, meaning he internalized his beliefs and Hogarth's teachings.
  • When Kent cowardly attempts to escape Rockwell to save his own skin, he stops Kent from leaving.
  • He is pacifistic and does not enjoy fighting, only having done so due to his systems integrating a defense system against any guns.
  • He saves the Town of Rockwell from the nuclear missile by sacrificing himself.
  • He chooses to be good and help people out of his own free will.
  • He has genuine free will, despite being made as a weapon by extraterrestrials.
  • He ultimately chose to be benevolent when he learns the concept of morality from Hogarth, not giving in to his programming.
