~ Arthur Fleck/Joker |
Arthur Fleck, later known as The Joker, is the main titular protagonist villain of the 2019 psychological comic book film Joker and in its upcoming 2024 sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. He was portrayed by actor Joaquin Phoenix, in his first Oscar-winning role. Phoenix previous played Jesus Christ in 2018's Mary Magdalene and later played Napoleon Bonaparte in 2023's Napoleon.
Role in the film[]
Arthur was born in Gotham City to an abusive mother, Penny Fleck, who allowed her boyfriend to mentally abuse Arthur, which led him to develop a neurological condition that made him laugh uncontrollably in unsuitable moments. As an adult, Arthur could not remember the abuse and was pursuing a career in stand-up comedy. Arthur was treated for his problems by a therapist, but he always felt she never paid him much attention which he resented her for.
In spite of his problems, Arthur was dedicated to taking care of his mother. After he was mugged, his colleague Randall gave him a gun to defend himself. While Arthur appreciated the gesture that attack still furthered his mental issues. Arthur developed an obsession with banker and single-mother Sophie Dumond and imagined himself with her. When three men, who worked as wall street stockbrokers from Wayne Enterprises, were harassing a woman in the subway Arthur burst into one of his laughters causing the men to turn their attention on Arthur and violently bully him. Arthur killed the first two men in self-defense but executed the third one needlessly. This meant Arthur unintentionally started a movement called the Clowns and massive riots against the wealthy and powerful people of Gotham.
Arthur discovered letters implying Thomas Wayne could be his father and went to Wayne Manor. There he met Thomas' son Bruce and stuck his fingers in Bruce's mouth before being sent away by the Waynes' butler Alfred Pennyworth, who claimed Penny was delusional. Arthur later snuck into a private screening, so he could talk to Thomas, but was attacked by him due to the incident with Bruce. Arthur did some digging into his parentage and learned of his mother's abuse. He then killed her as she was in the hospital due to an illness. He also may have killed Sophie but this is unknown.
Before the killing of Penny, Arthur witnessed his favorite tv host and idol Murray Franklin mocking him on live television and agreed to go on his show. When he is visited by Randall and other former co-worker Gary, he kills Randall as he betrayed his trust and told their boss about the situation with the gun, but spares Gary as he was always nice to him. On Murray's show, Arthur confessed to the murders, claiming no one would care if the victims were of lower social status to before eventually Killing Murray. Arthur is imprisoned but arranged for Thomas and his wife Martha to be murdered by one of his clowns. It is implied that he killed his old therapist When he meets her again at Arkham.
