He studied at the choreography department of the Swedish Academy of Dance from 1981 to 1984 and received a scholarship at the American Dance Festival in North Carolina in 1985. His interest was the whole and he often got involved in most parts of the dance works he created, as a set designer, costume designer, and lighting designer. Per Jonsson worked on a variety of different, independent stages - not least at Fylkingen, Kulturhuset, Moderna dansteatern and Dansens hus in Stockholm - in addition to the fact that from 1983 he began working occasionally at the Stockholm Opera.
