He prevails upon Bob Austin in the Government service to use his influence with Brant, Chief of the Department, to have him placed on the force. This Bob does and Mason is assigned to his first case, that of running down a band of opium "operators." The head of this gang is James Vorec, who keeps his daughter Helen completely ignorant of his illicit traffic. Through a slight accident, Mason meets and becomes enamored with Helen. He forgets his mission in pursuit of her heart. At length he secures her answer to his proposal. Joe Bent is filled with jealously and seeks to be revenged. He steals a package of opium, and telling Helen that her father asked her to deliver it, he goes to Mason and tells him that at a certain place he will see one of a gang of opium operators. Mason goes to the place and sees Helen delivering a package, which he finds to contain opium. His duty demands that he must arrest her. Vorec realizes it will be discovered that he is a criminal and ruin Helen's happiness. Before he can see Helen to confess she is arrested by Mason. She defends her father, taking the full blame herself. Mason resigns from the force. Bent taunts Vorec, but becoming fearful of Vorec's wrath, flees. Vorec captures him and forces him to confess, clearing Helen. Vorec dies of a wound received in the fight, leaving Helen alone. She gives the money her father left her to charity and takes a position in Burrows' home. Mason longs for her but doesn't try to see her; she is heartbroken. Thus matters stand when they come face-to-face at a ball given by the Burrows--she is the maid, he is the honored guest. The fight each is putting up moves Bob to interfere. Amy Burrows is trying her best to evoke a proposal from Mason. Helen sees them. Bob makes Mason understand that Helen is breaking her heart for him as he is for her. He seeks her out and their love bridges the gulf. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
