Years before, Gamo had won the love of Gladys, Bardon's daughter, and had eloped with her during her father's absence abroad. After his marriage he had descended to the lowest depths, becoming a vile drunkard and constantly beating his wife, whom he finally deserted and left to die of starvation. Bardon, although he had sought high and low for his daughter, had not found her until a few hours before her death, when he had sworn to be revenged upon the coward that had ruined her life. He finds Gamo with his performing tigers at the Hippodrome and determines that the hour has now come for his revenge. During the performance, Gamo is injured by one of the tigers, who seems filled with a deadly hatred of him. As soon as he is well, Gamo sells the animal, which is purchased by Bardon, who means to use the beast as his instrument of vengeance. Bardon seeks out Gamo and invites him to the house, where, having the man alone with him, he reveals his identity. Gamo realizes that his life is in danger and that Bardon intends his destruction. He attempts to leave the room, but finds that he is locked in. When he comes to investigate he finds that he is in a chamber without either door or windows and that escape is impossible. A secret door in the side of the room opens and Gamo finds himself looking at a cage in which is imprisoned the very tiger that had so lately attacked him. The door of the cage is slowly lifted and nothing remains between him and the ferocious beast. When the room is at last opened by Bardon's servants they find Gamo a lifeless corpse upon the door, having been killed by the tiger, while in the next room Bardon, who had been overcome by his emotions, also lies lifeless.
