Users, either innately or through training, are masters of wielding short swords, knives between 30-60cm in length construed as swords. With great skill in wielding a short sword, the user are deadly fighters in close ranged combat, being able to perform powerful and blinding thrusting attacks and slashes as well as parry and defend from any physical attack with extraordinary skill and finesse.
In Japanese the word shoto means short sword.

Viggo Grimborn (How to Train Your Dragon) had several metal "daggers" that were shorter sword-like that he used summon dragons like a Submaripper to battle a Shellfire by dropping it in the water to start water vibrations and another to lure a wild Skrill because of their electrical properties make them attracted to metal.
