The Johto Pokédex is a regional Pokédex introduced in Generation II, in which it is titled the New Pokédex. It can register up to 251 species of Pokémon in Generation II and 256 Pokémon in Generation IV. The Johto Pokédex begins with Chikorita, one of the First partner Pokémon, and ends with Celebi, a Mythical Pokémon. The Johto Pokédex first appears in Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, returns in Pokémon Crystal Version, and in the former pair's remakes, Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version.
Description[]
The Johto Pokédex has two covers, one on the top and another on the right side. There is a light blue lens that is visible regardless whether the console is open or closed. The Johto Pokédex can be opened by pressing a black button centered within a Poké Ball-like logo. A small screen with two small buttons is on the upper half, and these can be closed by the upper cover. Some buttons and a control pad are placed on the lower part, and they are covered by the cover on the right. The interior of the Pokédex resembles a Game Boy Color, the system that the Generation II games were released for, as shown from the arrangement of the control pad and two round buttons below the screen. However, the screen appears more monochromatic, comparable to that of a Game Boy. When the Johto Pokédex is closed, it resembles a cell phone.
The Johto Pokédex was given a full redesign in Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version. It appears in two different colors: red for male trainers and light pink for female trainers. It is a clamshell device with two screens, one beneath the cover and one on the lower half, and closing the device protects both screens. On the surface of the model is a green indicator light and a blue button that opens the Pokédex. There are two styluses on the sides that can be used to interact with the lower screen, a function based on the Nintendo DS, the system on which Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version released, similarly to the Sinnoh Pokédex, which is based on the Nintendo DS entirely.
Appearances[]
Generation II[]
In the Generation II games, this Pokédex can be accessed by selecting "New Pokédex Mode" on the Pokédex sorting menu, so the Johto Pokédex is not a full-fledged Pokédex of its own. The Johto Pokédex retains every feature of the Kanto Pokédex from Generation I, in addition to being able to display a Pokémon's footprint and organize the list of Pokémon either alphabetically or by evolution. National Pokédex numbers are used consistently throughout the Generation II games, which introduces 100 Pokémon amongst the returning 151 Pokémon from Generation I, for a total of 251 Pokémon.
Generation IV[]
In the Generation IV games Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, the Johto Pokédex was made into a distinct Pokédex that can have entries for up to 256 species of Pokémon. It added some new features such as the ability to search by Pokémon from the touch screen. Besides the usual English, Pokémon entries can be seen in five other languages: French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Japanese.
