Biography[]
Early life[]
Not much is known about this man, except that he was a hangman in Saint Martin in the 1750s.[3]
Execution of Carina Smyth[]
In 1751, after being mistaken for a witch, prisoner Carina Smyth was sentenced to death by hanging. It was this man who was assigned to execute Smyth, at the same time as another executioner was to kill notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow by guillotine. During the executions, the hangman was greatly annoyed by Carina's argument with Sparrow.[3]
However, before the hangman could pull the lever to hang Carina, the whole event was interrupted by Jack Sparrow's old crew of the Dying Gull lead by former Royal Navy sailor Joshamee Gibbs. A few moments later, one brave pirate, Scrum, attempted to come to Carina's rescue, drop-kicking the hangman. The hangman was not in the least bit fazed, and Scrum ended up hurting himself more than his opponent. Carina gave an exasperated groan as she helped Scrum finally defeat the executioner by kicking him off the gallows.[3] His further fate is unknown.
Behind the scenes[]
- The Hangman was played by an uncredited John Reynolds in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
- While the character had no lines in the actual film, in the prequel novel The Brightest Star in the North: The Adventures of Carina Smyth he asked Carina for her final words. The scene where Carina kicks him off the gallows doesn't appear in the book. The character doesn't appear in the film's novelization and the film's comic book adaptation where his role is taken by the British soldiers.
- In Jeff Nathanson's 2013 early draft of the Dead Men Tell No Tales script Jack Sparrow and Carina Smyth's execution was set in Port Royal, not Saint Martin, so it's possible this character was originally intended to be the same executioner who appeared in The Curse of the Black Pearl and At World's End.[4]
