The HMS Hyena was a three-masted British Royal Navy vessel. Her powerful below-decks armament enabled her to skirmish and triumph over even the most powerful vessels employed by the pirates of the Caribbean, but the crew was more inclined to bring the vessel in close to their opponents and board them, engaging in hand-to-hand combat with swords and other handheld weaponry. Her name was a continuation of the Navy tradition of naming ships after animal species.
