Scented Cards 2 Ways!

Hello my crafty friend. I’m so glad you stopped by today. Not only do I have two fun ways of adding fragrance to your cards, but we’re celebrating two different hops too! Heffy Doodle has teamed up with Time for Tea Designs for a fun collaboration, and both of my cards today feature their products. The second hop is honoring my friend Annalisa, who just reached 1000 subscribers on her YouTube channel, so I’ve got a video below, sharing both techniques.

First, let’s take a look at my finished cards (I wish we had smell-o-vision for these)…

Cute, right? And they smell divine! So how do we add scent to our cards? Let’s start with the first technique…

Scented Embossing Powders

Scented embossing powders have fragrance embedded in the plastic, and are a great way to add an aromatic element to your cards. The key is to cover large areas with 2-4 coats of the powder. The more powder you use, the more fragrant your cards will be. When melting the powder, use strong locking tweezers to hold your pieces and avoid burning your fingers. For my first card, I coated the pieces of a die cut coffee cup with jasmine, raspberry, chocolate, and java powders. The result is a lightly scented raspberry mocha effect.

I finished the card by popping a die cut fairy on top of the cup, and attaching the cup to an ink splattered card base. The coffee sentiment tied everything together, and a few brown gems add sparkle. Remember the rule – no naked envelopes! I stamped another fairy onto a kraft envelope with brown ink.

So what if you don’t have scented embossing powders, or your card design doesn’t allow for large embossed areas? Let’s take a look at another technique…

Perfume and Essential Oils

You can use perfume, cologne, or essential oils to scent your cards. This technique is almost effortless and works with any card. Simply apply a few squirts/drops of fragrance to a cotton ball and seal it in a plastic bag with your card. To avoid staining or having your colors bleed, Don’t allow the cotton ball to touch your card. (For the same reason, don’t apply the perfume or oil directly to your card.) Paper is porous, so it will absorb the fragrance over time. Leave your card sealed in the bag for a few hours, or overnight. You can tuck your envelope in the bag too, for a stronger effect.

You can see my slimline card with the cutest little skunks and a “stinkin” sentiment just begged for a fragrant element, making it interactive in a way. I love how this turned out!
