Long Summary[]
Kuma watches Luffy perform his Gomu Gomu no Axe attack on some rocks, completely pulverizing them and scaring the local wildlife. Kuma thinks back to his time with Dragon and he mentioned how familiar Dragon seemed to be with the land, and when he went off to stretch his legs, he found a remote village with a young boy living there that seemed to remind him of Dragon. Dragon, however, tells Kuma if he keeps talking about this he might as well kill him himself, confusing Kuma. Dragon says that a child is their parent’s weak spot. Kuma quickly realizes what he means and drops the topic. Luffy, meanwhile, is amazed by his new move and decides to save it when he confronts a super strong enemy after he gets his crew so he can protect them. The Den Den Mushi on Kuma then starts to ring and he teleports himself away before Luffy can notice him. Luffy comments that he felt a super strong presence and searches to find and defeat it.
The mission Kuma received was to destroy a pirate crew that raided a nearby merchant ship. However, he first stops to check on the merchants, choosing to safely escort them to a hospital first before going after the pirates. When he does, he instead tells the pirates to turn themselves in, and they nervously return all of the cargo they stole to avoid any more trouble. All the while, Kuma continues to write letters to Bonney, who eagerly awaits to read them. Unfortunately, she has not received any of them. Gyogyo says he might have forgotten because of work or the News Coos keep doing their jobs incorrectly. Either way, Conney says that one day a letter will pop up. Unbeknownst to all of them, Alpha has been intercepting the newspaper and Kuma’s letters, giving the paper to Bonney while tearing up Kuma’s letters in disgust. By this point, Kuma has been sending around ten letters a month.
Alpha comes in to give Bonney her medicine, though she is surprised to see her on top of a clearly beaten Gyogyo. He gives her the medicine (which is actually a bad tasting placebo) as Gyogyo asks Conney why they are silent about Bonney’s powers, and Conney says it is to be safe. Meanwhile, on Lab 08, Dr. Vegapunk has successfully removed his brain from his head, and now all he has to do is lift it and the lab itself into the air. Stussy, who was with him, comments that his new appearance suits him, and Kuma, who was also there, asks what will happen when he loses his individuality, causing Stussy to wonder which is worse: a human with no free will, or a clone that has it, thus prompting Dr. Vegapunk to remind her that he considers her human.
Dr. Vegapunk tells him that without his personality, he will not hesitate to harm anyone if ordered to, even a child. However, he roughly has one more year until the procedure is complete so he should still have some free will. Kuma starts writing another letter, saying he wants to let Bonney know how much he loves her right until the very end, which Stussy finds very sweet. In the letter Kuma wishes Bonney a happy ninth birthday, which she celebrates with her family in Sorbet. At night, she does not receive the letter, and she starts to cry.
After half a year passes, Bonney is completely healed of Sapphire Scales. Also, Kuma continues to aid the Revolutionary Army whenever he can but he leaves without saying a word. Dragon says they need to respect Kuma’s wishes to keep them uninformed. As for Bonney, Alpha continuously refuses to let her outside, stating she needs to stay put before her tenth birthday, even though that went against Vegapunk's estimate. It turns out, Conney overheard Alpha reveal herself as a government agent, making her even more suspicious that she will not let Bonney go free. Conney then comes up with a plan to sneak Bonney out of the country and have her set sail to locate Kuma, sending Gyogyo and his buddies with her in her search.
The plan involved Bonney transforming herself to look like Conney and walk away with some luggage, with Alpha none the wiser. She basks in the outside world as she reaches her friends, who show off their new ship made to look like a pizza. Alpha, however, finds out about the deception and starts chasing after her, planning to beat Bonney to an inch of her life and chain her up and kill any of her accomplices. Bonney intercepts her, using her Distorted Future move to make her look like Nika based on the stories Kuma told her. With a giant fist, she knocks out Alpha, allowing her and her new crew to set sail.
Word eventually got out to the World Government that Bonney had escaped them, and eventually, Bonney would make a name for herself as an infamous pirate in the new era.
