Vince Joly is a video game artist that worked on Retro Studios between 2004 and 2019, starting as an animator and eventually becoming art director.
History[]
Joly originally worked at Radical Entertainment and Namco Hometek, where he was involved on the Pac-Man World franchise, among other games. In 2004 he moved to Retro Studios, where he assisted with the cinematics and animations for Metroid Prime 2, later becoming lead animator for Metroid Prime 3 and Metroid Prime Trilogy.
He promoted to art director with Donkey Kong Country Returns, where he led the game's brighter artstyle, distinctively different from Retro's previous work on the Metroid Prime franchise; he also provided some animations for Donkey Kong. Afterwards, he worked on Mario Kart 7, where he led Retro's collaboration with Nintendo EAD overseeing all the artwork on characters, courses and karts.
For Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Joly became Creative Director, where he was in charge of coming up with the Snowmad characters, as well as writing and boarding the entire game's story. He retained the same role for the Nintendo Switch release.
In January 2019, Vince Joly left Retro Studios and went to work to other companies.
