Need for Speed: Carbon – Own the City is a 2006 game for the GBA and DS. It was the last game to be released for the GBA. This is a handheld spinoff to the main game, Need for Speed: Carbon. It has similar theming but, with its own plot and gameplay

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is typical of a racing game. The player controls the car from a third person view and drives in various urban tracks. There is a boost in the form of Nitro that is spent as used. There is a crew system that has AI partners race alongside the player and help the player with helpful abilities. They are activated by tapping the tag on the touch screen in the DS version or with both shoulder buttons on the GBA version. Further AI partners are unlocked as the player takes over the various crews in the city.

A major component of the game is the customization. Winning races will unlock parts that have different specs. The DS version allows for custom paint jobs using the touch screen.

The GBA version is simplified compared to the DS version though it is still using 3D graphics. The environments are all rectangular buildings that stretch across blocks and flashing arrows are used to indicate where the player needs to turn.

Plot[]

The game starts with the player and his brother racing. Another car crashes into them as they approach the finish line, resulting in the player getting amnesia and his brother dying. Upon waking up in the hospital, he is greeted by his brother's girlfiend, Sara, and his brother's loyal wingman, Carter. The story is about the player trying to figure out who caused the accident and taking over the city with their crew.

The player eventually races against the Eastsiders' crew leader, Poorboy. Poorboy tells the player that the accident was caused by someone named Buddy, saying he came out of nowhere and caused the crash. The Krimsons' crew leader, EX, explains to the player what he knows about the night of the race and Buddy's whereabouts, but during which Sara is seemingly caught in an explosion.

The player is driven further to find out who is causing the trouble and soon confronts Buddy. Buddy reveals that he was hired and hands the player his phone. After defeating The Corps' crew leader, MK, he helps out who planned the murder using Buddy's phone, as it is revealed he's an undercover cop investigating Mick's death.
